Using an FFT Filter to Remove Repeating Patterns

Demonstration of removing a honeycomb pattern from an old photograph that was scanned.

Basically, the reason why black works better is because you're removing that frequency from the image. Because a pattern essential is a repeating frequency, an image with a repeating pattern will show up as a brighter spot in the FFT version of the image. The middle is low frequency (it changes over many pixels) and the further out you get the higher the frequency. The honeycomb pattern changes over pretty very few pixels, and that why it's further out; it's a higher frequency. Just for the hell of it, use a big brush to paint everything but the middle black. You'll get the same image but blurred. :)

The paper was called silk finish and was used a lot because it was a little bit cheaper to print on this stuff. It is a nightmare though.

Cheers for the tip :) I've tried this on an old photo but it comes out looking wrong. Like a negative. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

If a smaller image works then you could try cropping the image into smaller parts and using the FFT on all the parts and then stitch them back together. I don't like that solution but it's the only thing I can think of if working on a smaller version of the image is out of the question.

Just a shot in the dark, but I tried running the FFT filter but I get a salmon pink noise when I'm at the RGB channel, and a white blank piece when I'm at the red channel. Any idea what could be wrong?

VSXD Tutorials Ok thanks. I did some trial and error and it seems that the limit for the filter I use is around 48.1MB. Anyway, for some reason after colouring out the white stars and applying the IFFT filter, the image would look like its colours have been inverted, with a very pale washed out appearance together and become somewhat transparent.
