how is this man not more popular? I've basically learned everything i know about configuring files from him lol.
@justins77962 жыл бұрын
just the video i needed man, i'm still on the fence with using i3 daily. i log into it, but small things like needing to change orientation of spawned windows feels like a chore and not faster than a generic Openbox config where i can manually tile windows into corners. If there's a sort of manual tiling ability to add on top of dynamical tiling that'd be awesome, but i get that would go against i3 as a tiling WM.

What an interesting little script. I personally still prefer manual tiling (like, yeah it takes an extra button press, but autotiling WMs rarely give me the layout I really want anyways so I still have to futz with them) but for folks who like it, this is pretty nifty. And yeah, I can totally relate to trying out all sorts of tiling WMs and still coming back to i3; I don't know if it's the multihead workspace configuration, or the readability of the config file, or something else I can't even put into words, but i3 just… works too well for me, y'know.

I know I'm in the minority but I can't imagine giving up the control a manual tiling manager give me. I often need particular layouts and being able to create them on the fly is great. That said, sometimes an automated solution would be nice. There are times where control over the placement of windows is not so important. This script seems to be a bit hacky though. Far from a "best of both worlds" solution. Doesn't seem to let you switch layout styles when the windows are already open. It just switches splits back and forth

Hey bro, could you do a video abt policy kit and authentication agent for standalone window manager users?

The only thing I hate about i3 is the way it handles workspaces. If the workspaces were more like bspwm's implementation, I'd switch back right now.

Strange that the most important aspect of a tiling window manager, the tiling window management, is something that you don't care too much about. :D Not hating or so, just a bit funny to me. I get it, there is more to it, so don't take my reply too seriously. I started with i3 too, but really disliked the manual tiling aspect, especially because I read there are automatic tilers out there. Otherwise I really liked i3, but after a while found out about Qtile, which is perfect fit to me. It is written and most importantly configured in Python and is automatic tiling, with a bunch of layout logics to choose from (to imitate BSPWM or XMonad in example). I just wrote my first extension for it and couldn't be more happier than that (I could, there are still flaws). So now I am continue watching your video. Had to comment after 1:19 . :D

STOP using external scripts when i3 has already a built in function which does dynamic tiling. e.g. _ autotiling: for_window [class="URxvt"] split toggle _ manual "dynamic" tiling: mod+q split toggle

@@sohailnoob What explanation do you need? The post is very explicit: for auto tiling (dynamic tiling) add the following to i3 config: *_for_window [class="XTerm"] split toggle_* If you want to use the manual way of "dynamic tiling" add: *_mod+Key split toggle_* to your i3 config
