Great demonstration of it! Took me quite awhile to get good results consistently. I had a lot of problems with fisheyes opening up at first and found out it helped to go with the heavier coat as you mentioned instead of brushing it out too thin. Also, when filling in the fisheyes and it was starting to set off, warming it up with the blow dryer will help level it out on the lure surface but the heat also speeds up the setting time.

I’ve found the Bob Smith Slow-Cure yellows a lot after a few months. The Finish-Cure does a much better job at resisting yellowing, and it has a thinner consistency so the bubbles come out easier. Give it a try.

My simple stand is a small piece of 2x4 about 5” long, I put a leather tack through the bottom of the my mixing cup, then all I do is put the same kind of mixing cup with epoxy in side the tacked cup and hold it with a gator clip! I can mix and mix and apply my epoxy and the gator clip holds it in place! My holder uses two different type cups, small and larger! As for bubbles once your epoxy is mixed, hit the epoxy for several seconds with your blow dryer, it eliminates lots of bubbles!

I am going to try adding the alcohol to the epoxy on my next baits to slow the working time down. I wanted to make sure I use the correct type of alcohol. Are you using denatured alcohol or isopropyl alcohol to mix with the BSI (and for cleaning your air brush etc.)?

I used Bob's two part epoxy for clearcoats about 5-6 years ago but every one of those clearcoats yellowed after awhile. Not sure what I was doing wrong, I loved the finish but I had to quit using it.

Another misinformed video. Hardener and resin don’t weight the same. Mix by volume. Yes candy paint needs to mixed with a carrier. Now politics? Opinions without reasons. SMH

JK, you are correct, they don't weight the same. However, if you know their weights you can mix by Ratio. I mix .88 grams of resin to .72 grams of hardener with BSI 2-part epoxy and it has always worked. In addition, many have posted online that if you err, it's best to err on too much hardener than not enough. So equal parts by weight will put a little extra hardener in the mix, which will still give you an epoxy that fully sets up, it will just set up a little quicker and shorten the working time. The proper mix give you a little more time to apply it and pop some bubbles.
@mike1261
@mike1261 Жыл бұрын
@@FattyMateo Not all resins are created equal, and it would be misinformed to say otherwise. You are correct in stating that hardener is heavier with some brands and requires less ratio in the mix. However, TrueCoat provides the weight ratios on the box and the bottles, it uses more hardener by weight than resin. Per manufacturers recommendations, mix by volume OR use 32 grams resin to 37 grams hardener by ratio, which means their hardener is lighter than the resin. If anything, mixing by weight to the 100th of a gram will be far more exact and repeatable than mixing volume by eye, but being that precise doesn't even matter, does it? Most epoxies are forgiving enough that a lot of folks mix them by eye for small batches. This may not be the best, most ideal method, but it has worked for many people, for many years, so I'd say it is also a viable method since many folks are achieving satisfactory results doing so. There's an old saying, "There's more than one way to skin a cat." Definitely not socially acceptable and I certainly don't know why you'd even want to, but it simply means, that there is more than one way to do things.
@mike1261
@mike1261 Жыл бұрын
@@FattyMateo Yes, in my first reply to you I covered BSI and what applying equal parts by weight would do, it will simply cause the resin to cure a little faster, not cause a catastrophe. I previously covered a couple other mixing methods as well. He mentioned in his video that he added more hardener than need, and explained why That's also why he used a couple drops of alcohol to increase the working time. Since I didn't realize this wasn't a new question, I went on to expound on our previous conversation. I hope you can see that even BSI can be mixed a little differently than by volume only, and still harden to an acceptable protective shell.
