Using Bobbinwork On Applique

I just did some bobbin work using some silk smbroidery ribbon, some DMC embroidery thread and some perles - MAGIC! I hand wound the bobbins and bypassed the tension completely. I never thought to use free motion and just used straight, zigzag, and blanket stitch so will have to try free motion next time

I’m wanting to try this as I do a lot of art quilts with appliqué. Question… so bobbin work is done before I would make the quilt sandwich?? Normally all my quilting is done after I add the batting n backing. Thank you. Your video was just what I was looking for!

It is completely possible to do bobbinwork with the full quilt sandwich, but it does make it slightly more challenging to get the ticker thread through all the layers for starting and stopping. I have added bobbinwork on a number of projects through all layers, but to get used to doing the technique I would suggest practicing on some test fabrics first. :)

You can either drop them or keep them up while doing this technique as long as you have a darning or free motion foot on your machine. If you have a normal applique foot on, you will need to keep them raised.
