Good work! I've been doing the same to my damaged exterior wood. I first tried water based wood filler and it just falls apart over time and doesn't adhere as well. Bondo is the best exterior wood filler and cheap at Walmart. What I recently learned is that for exterior wood application, its best to use and oil based primer. I'm currently working on repairing an exterior door with mdf. I used some water mixed with Titebond 3 to harden the raw wood fibers. I then used an oil based primer. Next I need to add some bondo, then prime the bondo and paint it.

So I have a cabin up near Yosemite. It's subject to currently 105 last week. In winter time it gets down to the teens. Like you, I had a few spots I wanted to fix with a crack in my siding. The problem is the wood expand and contracts and the wood filler does not. The one that I found holds up the best seems to be the dap oil-based Dap school wood filler. It still has a slight crack around the filler and wood joint after expanding contracting. I think what I'm going to do is put some caulking in that crack so it can flex a little bit. Until as time comes to replace the siding.

Thank you for actually posting something constructive and intelligent, instead of making senseless insults like most of these folks. Digressing, that makes sense. I will look into that next time as I did not even consider it.

That’s a great idea I might take your lead on this and use expandable caulk

Best to skip to 1:50 unless you want some razor blade induced anxiety.

Is that cedar siding?

There is wood hardener that can use instead of the primer

Can unpainted, dried bondo get wet? I have a few repairs to do before painting and my siding definitely needs to be washed first. Wondering if I do Bondo after washing or before..

I would wash before! You probably can if you’re not blasting it with a pressure washer but I’d just wait.

Bondo does not stick to painted surfaces very well

It would have been a lot easier to mix it on a piece of cardboard.

Cardboard is porous and while you’re right it’s not supposed to be

I’d use a hard plastic cutting board from the dollar store.
