2 weeks ago, my estranged father had a stroke. When I entered his house, I was confronted with 15 years of paperwork and a mountain of trash. I felt totally overwhelmed, but then I asked myself "What would Mack do?" With that, I picked a small area and began to clear a space. I did this for days(along with a good friend who came in from out of town). Whenever I would get angry with my Dad for leaving me with this mess, I remind myself of what you would say about having compassion. I remembered that he was sick and that he wasn't doing this out of malice. Finally, after I sorted and cleaned as much as I could, I called a local company to haul stuff away and do a final cleaning. If I hadn't been watching your videos all this time, I don't know if I would have had the strength to get through this. Now I can spend time with my dad during his final days in hospice, rather than deal with what he left behind. Thank you, Mack. You made a difference.

You are a LEGEND!!! You made your house a beautiful home. My husband used to laugh at me when I’d do a deep clean, all the laundry and get rid of all rubbish lying about just before going on vacation. Even changed all the sheets! I told him it was for two reasons: if something happens to us, 1) will have to come into our home and think “Ugh! Where do we start?”. 2)We come home to a clean house with clean sheets. When the house would start to get a bit messy, he started scheduling holidays 🤣! Cheeky fella! We moved 3 years and after watching you for so long, I hired a skip! It was full within 2 days and it felt so good. Just recently my brother, Aunt and mum died within 18 months of each other. I inherited three homes full of stuff. To say it has been overwhelming is not even close. I have Asperger’s so change and I have never gotten along. Watching you get your new digs in order with a house moose to boot, you’ve lit a fire under my bum! I’m off to order the largest skip for drop off on Monday! Cheers and many blessings. *I’m so pleased your back is better 😊

Mack obviously knows a lot more about this than I do, but I still think the best cure for hoarding disorder is to move a couple times. As soon as you have to pack and unpack all your stuff a couple times, you get much less attached to any of the needless items. I firmly believe the fact that I live in a Summer tourist destination, where most places are only available on a October-May lease, is the only reason I don't have the same disorder that both of my grandmothers had.
@kathygreer20972 ай бұрын
Not so much. I helped my daughter move three times and couldn’t get her to get rid of much. Actually some of her stuff is still at her first house ‘cause her daughter bought it. 😂

The house is also an attachment that they cannot get rid of. We had to move my great aunt into a nursing home because she was developing dementia pretty rapidly. We found a place that specialized in dementia care because she required a 24/7 care person and all of the adults in my family have to work and cannot take off for that amount of care. I feel bad but we had to trick her into thinking she was moving into a resort because she would get violent if we suggested she needed help. The staff played along and insured us that this was more common then one would hope. I am not sure the ethics behind our deception to her but she was not safe in her level 9 hoarded 3 story house (I know because it was not safe for 18yr old me!).
@kg68012 ай бұрын
That's interesting and I'm really glad that helped for you, I can see how that would work for some people. I just want to mention some things so that people don't take away that someone moving house a couple of times is what will or should always be some kind of cure for hoarding disorder for everyone. The regular practicing of prioritising and discarding and weighing up keeping things versus having to do all the work to relocate them is part of the executive function strengthening and therapy that's helpful for treating hoarding disorder. Though with the moving situation it'd depend on the circumstances and where someone was in the severity of symptoms, if someone feels overwhelmed and pressured it's less likely for those skills to be developed and the response can go more the other way, that trying to sort stuff and prioritise feels threatening and that can increase the severity of the symptoms. Just in my own situation, I was in the first level of hoarding and disorganisation beginning to become problematic when I moved the second time and while having to move did highlight the need for prioritising and I was able to discard some stuff, the situation's pressures just exacerbated my overwhelm and made things worse, it wasn't the only thing that did that but it certainly didn't help. I wasn't able to practice or gain abilities I couldn't access at the time, and it added another layer of extreme discomfort to attempts to sort, organise and discard. I'm not sure if by cured you mean you felt you might have been destined to have the disorder but this prevented that, or that you had traits, or that you were diagnosed, but for many the tendency will always be there even after a lot of work to change thinking and responses and increase functionality, another setback in life like an illness or loss or return of depression or anxiety or even just a change in circumstances can have the old tendencies and overwhelm return, so it's helpful to have a plan to recognise and address that and (hopefully have someone to communicate with about it) for the old thought traps not to get too established and overwhelming again. Thank you for sharing that, that's a valuable experience to go through.

I am at the beginning of the video and already feeling my Soul recharge! I am a big fan of your style in your house. I really enjoy another Gen Xer in my boat, and killing it! Thank you for sharing your master class on making OCD your Bitch, your wit, your reno, and your enormous applicable knowledge on so many things we need to get and keep for our lives to be moving forward. I'm glad you can get back to the work you love and the priceless good it does. I am completely content with all your projects at home. Please don’t push your spine or overload yourself. I have learned that none of us gets away with not slowing our pace a bit at our age no matter how well we plan or how determined we are to push through. We just end up paying on the other side. I really do not want that for you! You are a big part of my sanity. Thank you, and don't break yourself. 💟

OMGOSH!!! The kitchen, bathroom and bedrooms look incredible! I cannot believe that after all you've been through this year, you're still spin kicking the hell out of this house. Most people would be sobbing in a corner, but you just... keep... going. You're my hero! 🫡🧢

We also have a black and white kitchen. Right now I have red accessories, when I get bored I can just change them out to another colour. They were green before. I might try teal next!

I think that's the coolest thing about black and white. Any colour POPS and is so visually stimulating, but relieving and happy feeling. I love bright colours so I need that POP...those homes that are too safe and beige bore me. Even though I like beige ( if I'm in the mood for calming tones) people seem to think if they go beige EVERYTHING needs to be beige/ white/ etc. And they forget the POP...imho.

Same, currently it's accented with a dark gold and jade green.

You are such an unwavering voice of reason. Thank you for pointing out the obvious which seems to often get forgotten these days - interior design is NOT about catching passing fads. For one because it's a waste of money to have everything repainted and refashioned every couple years or so - and most importantly because it is OUR house. It's designed to serve our unique needs, not impress other people. Which colour palettes and style of furniture makes us the cosiest and most comfortable is truly nobody's business. (BTW, FNM's Angel Dust is one of my favourite albums of all time as well.)

Your place is coming along nicely. You’re a blessing to help this woman. That’s awful to hear about her getting attacked by dogs. Hopefully she’ll be awarded compensation for her injuries. She obviously has life threatening injuries. Prayers for a speedy recovery. 🙏💞

@@Ms._Purple_Apple if she is a Letter carrier, I hope she never, ever goes back. I hope she uses the pants of these people! And if she worked for the post office, I hope they don’t screw her around like they did me.

The kitchen looks great! Some distant acquaintances run a channel called Cavalcade of Food, and a month ago they visited a place called Rambler Ranch, a Nash automotive museum, but it also has a large collection of mid-century kitchen appliances, with one room set up as a diner featuring a lot of turquoise. The decor lines up with what you're doing.

I love Cavalcade of Food! That trip through Rambler Ranch was so much fun for me, especially since I live in Denver.

Sending prayers to the lady in Kentucky. I’m looking forward to the video. Thank you for helping her, Mack. If I didn’t live in 🇨🇦, I’d saddle up my moose and help out. 🫎🫎❤️

So proud of your ability to get it done. We all have those days that can become overwhelming, unreachable, or we simply just ignore, we just don’t know the personal issues that some are going through. You seem to have an intelligent outlook for those in need with a sympathetic acknowledgment. I truly believe you have a gift…not just your cleaning, organization, sanitary insight but the psychological issues and needs that are part those that have these challenges! Nice touches in your “new” home. Greetings from sunny California 👏👏👏👍

Just thought I'd add for anyone wondering what to hang up to make home feel like home: pictures of you, your family, your hometown, any good memories you caught on camera, the location of your favorite memories, people who inspire you, places that inspire you, art that inspires you, artists you love, album covers you love (example shown here lol!), And of course anything you've made or have documentation you've achieved. I'm sure there's more! I wouldn't be scared about things not matching, you can always edit photos to be black and white and make the frames or matting whatever color you're trying to add to your place. Even pages from your favorite books make the place less of a "how can I impress the internet and guests" and more a place that reminds you what matters to you. That's real luxury, I think!

Some fantastic advice! Decorate as you like! You want to come home to a place that makes you feel good. I love your choices here! The teal is fantastic. We have rainbow titanium things in my house, because that's my favorite color. Also, that clock is amazing! Absolutely love it!

yknow looking at the final product of the kitchen before the teal I tilted my head being like "what were you thinking?" but then you added the teal and then I went "oooooooh" n it looks really good, seriously good work my dude :3
