Using Density to Confirm a 3D Printed Part is Solid | Formnext 2023

One of the quality assurance requirements for many 3D printing applications is to confirm the part is fully solid. Parts may be sectioned or CT scanned to verify the lack of voids. Technology from Dimensionics offers potentially a simpler method: Measure the part's density to indicate a lack of internal voids. The company's new system quickly weighs a part in two different fluids, the open air and a liquid of known density. The difference in weight in the two fluids allows the part's density to be precisely known, and this directly indicates solidness. For example, several different parts might all have different masses and volumes, but if they are made of the same material and all fully solid, then their densities should be the same. You can do the same with a jewellery balance beaker and a hook at home without paying the multi thousand dollars price tag of this specialized machine. Oh also it doesn't work well when you have a very complex shape where bubbles can trap.
