The federal Probation and Pretrial Services system uses research, data, and evidence-based practices to guide policy and practices in supervising individuals. In this video, officers describe how research done by social scientists is used to devise strategies for individual clients, strategies that can be effective in changing lives. For example, officers say they recognize that long-established criminal thinking patterns can impact behavior and that cognitive behavioral interventions can lead to changes in behavior.
Research shows that people who are at higher risk of recidivism need more programming, more services, and more treatment than those at lower risk. “We are listening to the research a lot more,” says one officer.
