With a Flap T, there isn't a stop of the air, so there isn't really a release either. It's just forward motion and connection the whole time.

Hi Rachel, I have a question about linking. How do you link "United States"? For the "d" in "United", which of the following do you use in normal conversation? (1) A true "d" - first stop, and then aspirate; and the the "s". (2) Only stop, but not aspirate; and then the "s". (3) Combine the "d" and the "s", and make the same sound as the last sound in "kids". (I don't think this is true. I never heard people speak this way. I put it here just in case my ears are wrong.) Thanks.

Why “sort of” follow the flap t rule? But “cut and paste” follow the syllabic consonant rules (t + schwa +n)? is that means syllabic cononsant rules always overrides the flap t rule? (just like the syllabic consonant rule also always overrides the nt silence t rule). If you can put this in your future video, that will be great, thanks.
@rachelsenglish5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion! The V consonant in 'of' won't allow for the same syllabic consonant rule as the N consonant. You could follow the syllabic consonant rule if the phrase was "sort in".

Flap T in informal conversational english, a t that comes between vowel, or after an r consonant and before a vowel will be pronounced as flap T, or just like a D between vowels. Examples: Part of - it’s part of the problem. Sort of -I’m sort of disappointed At a -She’s at a birthday party. That I -I thought that I was late

@كورسسسكوللشبكات4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Teacher.. I have a question.. The letter "t" in "sort of or part of" is between the explicit "r" and the vowel "o" , so why that "t" is pronounced like "Flap t" .. it is not between two vowel letters or even two sounds of vowel
@rachelsenglish4 жыл бұрын
Hi! This is an exception to the Flap T rule, because the R can behave like a vowel sound (in fact, there is an R vowel - as in 'turn, fur, earth' etc.) - so the T can be flapped after the R because of those vowel properties.
@كورسسسكوللشبكات4 жыл бұрын

When I try Flap T sound, My tongue tip can not reach straightfoward and does subconsciously touch from retroflex(my maximum front of fast touch, letter,ladder) to palato-alveolar(more frequently) to palatal(water) of cdn.britannica.com/47/4347-050-32F3830A.jpg which is from alveolar ridge to 5 to 6 of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alveolar_ridge influenced by my language even though I tried making its position like American English D deliberately. The problem is when I try it super-consciosly and move tongue tip to D position just behind root or just backside of front teeth, water becomes waLer, not wader. Is it OK? or my toungue must be straight and touch teeth more more carefully?
@rachelsenglish5 жыл бұрын
We definitely don't want an L sound. You can make the flap further back in the mouth of you need to -- that would probably sound more correct.
