Using geogrid material for a patio

In this video We used 2 inch geogrid material for a back patio 1 peice not 2. This alternative patio material also works great on driveways. Ill put an amazon link in the description below. Now the additional turf an anything else will cost you extra but the geogrid can be used as is with just rock

Is there a reason why you decided to lay the geocells on top of the soil instead of digging down? I'm considering doing this for a firepit but a lot of other videos I've seen they dug out a few inches before laying out the fabric plus everything else. Will there be a pro/con between the two?
