That was really helpful! Is it possible to point me towards some exemplars of research using grounded theory? Of course the seminal research conducted by Glasser and Straus, but are there any other hallmark studies of what good grounded theory looks like?

Respected sir I have a question is there a way to integrate the use of thematic analysis in grounded theory method after the coding process is done and you have your core concepts or categories. Can you at this point use thematic analysis as a technique on the transcript to generate themes and sub-themes relevant to the core concepts and categories. Thank you in advance.
@methodologyrelatedpresenta34484 жыл бұрын
You could use thematic analysis technique but you should make sure that the concepts/categories/themes play the role of helping to explain the phenomenon of study and representing the data collected from participants. Also, you need to use additional strategies such as constant comparison and theoretical sampling.
@rockyjin97964 жыл бұрын
@@methodologyrelatedpresenta3448 Thank you so much for the reply and yes I have used all of the Grounded Theory strategies throughout the study just wanted to further elaborate and add themes and sub-themes relevant to each of the concepts derived from GT method. Once again thanks a lot this really helped me in some thing I was really worried about.

You're welcome! Closed-ended questionnaire is a quantitative data collection tool so it can't be used in a grounded theory study.

@@methodologyrelatedpresenta3448 Hello sir, i want to ask something related to this and i will give you my understanding . Please confirm if i am right . If i get a data which has a choice. For example. Did you like this drink or did you not like this drink. I think this is nominal(categorical) data. And i think i can draw a bar graph to display the results. Will this be qualitative data or Quant? As far as i feel this will be qualitative as we are using nominal variable and drawing a bar graph not a histogram.
@methodologyrelatedpresenta34484 жыл бұрын
@@Dupamine It is a quantitative data since you provided participants options to choose from. The example you gave is a quantitative data with categorical variable (see: www.linkedin.com/posts/drphilipadu_quantitativeanalysis-quantitativeresearch-activity-6671717067722420224-S6fw)

Title: "Using Grounded Theory Approach: From Start to Finish (Philip Adu, PhD.)" 1. Introduction to Grounded Theory: Speaker: Philip Adu, PhD. Grounded Theory is a research methodology that involves a systematic, step-by-step, but repetitive process of data collection and analysis to develop a theory that explains or understands a phenomenon. It is an active and intensive data collection process driven by the research problem or question and the gaps identified in the initial stage. Grounded Theory was developed by Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss in the 1960s and has since been widely used in various disciplines, including sociology, psychology, nursing, and education. 2. When to use Grounded Theory: Speaker: Philip Adu, PhD. Grounded Theory is used to explain a phenomenon, such as leadership, bullying, success, disability discrimination, racism, loneliness, mental health, stigma, or to examine and understand experiences living with mental health issues, homelessness, or domestic violence. The research question should be open-ended, starting with how, what, or why, and exploratory in nature. Grounded Theory is particularly useful when there is little or no existing theory on the topic, or when the existing theory is insufficient or inappropriate for the research context. 3. Meaning of Theory: Speaker: Philip Adu, PhD. A theory is an abstract description of how concepts are related to each other in explaining or understanding an action, event, or process. It is a set of interrelated constructs, definitions, and propositions that present a systematic view of a phenomenon. A theory is not a hypothesis or a speculation but is based on empirical evidence and is developed through a rigorous and systematic process. Grounded Theory aims to generate a theory that is grounded in the data, meaning that it emerges from the data and is not imposed on it. 4. Characteristics of Grounded Theory Approach: Speaker: Philip Adu, PhD. * No preconceived ideas: The data should drive the analysis, and the researcher's background and pre-knowledge should be bracketed to avoid influencing the analysis. This means that the researcher should approach the data with an open mind and avoid making assumptions or drawing conclusions based on their prior experience or knowledge. * Analysis should be data-driven: The researcher actively searches for information to fill the gaps identified in the initial stage and tests the categories and theories developed. This means that the analysis is an ongoing and iterative process, where the researcher constantly revisits the data, refines the categories and theories, and seeks new data to test and refine them. * Writing memos: The researcher should document their thoughts, observations, reflections, and methodology process, which will help in developing the theory and reporting or explaining the findings. Memos are informal notes or reflections that the researcher writes during or after the data collection or analysis. They can include ideas, insights, questions, or concerns about the data or the analysis process. Memos are essential in Grounded Theory as they help the researcher to keep track of their thoughts and ideas and to develop a rich and detailed theory. * Attainment of saturation: Saturation in Grounded Theory is reached when the new data collected does not cause a change in the theory developed. It is a subjective concept, and the researcher should ensure that their audience believes in the findings. Saturation is the point in the data collection and analysis process where the researcher has gathered enough data to answer the research question and to develop a theory that is rich, thick, and comprehensive. Saturation is not about the quantity of the data but about the quality and the depth of the understanding that the data provides. 5. Data Collection Strategies: Speaker: Philip Adu, PhD. Grounded Theory data collection is informed by ethnographic methods, and the researcher goes to the field where participants are located and actively engages with them to collect rich data. The three main data collection strategies are intensive interviewing, observation, and document or artifact collection. The choice of strategy depends on the research problem, question, and feasibility. * Intensive interviewing: This involves in-depth, open-ended interviews with participants to explore their experiences, perceptions, and attitudes about the phenomenon being studied. The interviews are usually audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim to ensure accuracy and completeness. * Observation: This involves the researcher directly observing the phenomenon being studied in its natural setting. The researcher may take field notes, photographs, or videos to document their observations and to capture the richness and complexity of the phenomenon. * Document or artifact collection: This involves the collection and analysis of documents or artifacts that are relevant to the phenomenon being studied. These may include reports, policies, letters, emails, photographs, or other materials that provide insights into the phenomenon. 6. Data Analysis Process: Speaker: Philip Adu, PhD. The data analysis process involves summarizing, abstracting, and assigning meaning to the data. The researcher should be open to multiple interpretations of the data, be flexible in allowing the data to drive the analysis, and be aware of the language used by the participants. The three main coding steps in Grounded Theory, as recommended by Shamas, are initial coding, focused coding, and theoretical coding. * Initial coding: This involves the line-by-line coding of the data to identify and label concepts or categories that emerge from the data. The codes should be descriptive, specific, and relevant to the research question. * Focused coding: This involves the selection and refinement of the most significant and relevant codes or categories from the initial coding. The researcher should focus on the codes that have the most explanatory power and that are most closely related to the research question. * Theoretical coding: This involves the integration and synthesis of the codes and categories into a higher-level, abstract theory that explains or understands the phenomenon being studied. The theory should be grounded in the data, meaning that it emerges from the data and is not imposed on it. 7. Visualizing Your Theory: Speaker: Philip Adu, PhD. It is essential to visualize the theory developed, as it will be easy for the audience to understand. The researcher can use software like inVivo, Inspiration, or Cmap, or use Word documents to create diagrams or illustrations that explain the theory. The visualization should be clear, concise, and visually appealing, and should capture the essence of the theory in a way that is easy to understand and remember. Additional Resources: The speaker recommends the book "Constructing Grounded Theory" by Dr. Shamas and a video of her interview about conducting a Grounded Theory study. These resources can provide further insights and guidance on how to use Grounded Theory in your research.
