When carrying a one piece paddle I would recommend laying the paddle on the crossbars just under the J rack before strapping down the kayak then secure it to the crossbars.

Good idea! I only have 2 piece paddles and typically throw them inside the vehicle, but that could work if I don't have room as well!

Wrong wrong wrong. Needs to be on the crossbar initially or on both sides as some roof rails do not have holes.

I agree, I should have routed it different through both. Also, when I use a car without "holes" on the side bars, I go around the crossbars.

Wrong, Wrong, Wrong. The strap should come over the Kayak from the "J" Bar and then both the cam buckle and belt should come down and connect (around) the crossbar. This way the cam buckle is pulling at the bottom of the kayak as close to the kayak as possible. If you run the strap down and out to the rails of the crossbar your losing tension on the available circumference of the kayak.
