Love your videos and thanks for the info! I found some seeds in my late Grandfather's garage labelled "700g tomato". After speaking with my grandmother and recalling him showing me that particular tomato, we figured out they were a minimum of 10 years old. I was lucky enough to germinate 3 out of 10 i tried this last season here in Australia. They have now set fruit and will produce fresh seed for the coming year! A special memory from my Grandfather which I'll always cherish.

Tip. Add a layer of rice in the bottom of the jar and a paper towel over that, then add your extra seeds. The rice will absorb any moisture. Or use one of those Silica Gel packets with the seeds. Keep them on the top shelf of your Fridge which is not as cold as the bottom shelf or the humidity controlled drawer.

Perfect! Thanks Doug!

All good up to the fridge mention. People will experience different results of warmer versus colder depending on the type of fridge they own; mine is colder at the top than it is at the bottom. It all depends on the engineered design.

@@cuznclive2236 My fridge is FRUSTRATINGLY different temp all over.....its maddening.
@GeoffryWK Жыл бұрын
@@cuznclive2236 Yeah, it varies with the design. Mine is around 40-45 degrees at the top shelf and around 35 to 40 at the bottom. Cold air sinks you know,

Storing seeds in the freezer will keep them viable for longer. This includes onions, carrots, and other seeds that generally have short shelf lives.

I really like those shorts and this one comes right on time. Got last years seeds out of storage and I should check them out to see if it these are still usable. I don't think I have to check my pumpkin seeds though - these are still in their original packaging. Time to make a nice spicy pumpkin soup and set them free in the wild soon 😁 I do still have a large box of edible flower seeds left over from last year so let's see if these are still "alive"

Hi! Great information! Just wondering if you can make more videos on this topic of seeds... like what is difference between hybrid, heritage, GMOs, etc. etc. etc. I used seeds from my previous pumpkins, squash, zucchini, cucumber I had all growing together the year before... some say not to do this? They could be toxic? Is this true???? Thanks for all the great videos! Always something to learn! Awesome!👍🌱

I store my harvested seeds in old pill bottles having UV protection or leftover paper towel/toilet paper rolls depending on the size of the seed.

Have you got any tips on growing Munstead Lavender? This is my third year of trying from seed. That last two years never produced any plants. Both of those times I sowed directly into the flower bed. Now I'm trying in seedling pots this year.

Tomatoes seeds can last a lot longer!
@TheRipeTomatoFarms Жыл бұрын
Yup, they can... They all can. I've planted seeds after 12 years and been successful. The point is viability starts to decrease to lower and lower levels of reliability. For many people, the ability to start over isn't there, so they have to be sure of germination rates. Time is money.

LOL...maybe it's just the way I store seeds, but EVERY year, I plant a bunch of old seeds just for the heck of it (I have a good sized collection, some 20+ years old), thinking, "oh, no way these are going to sprout, but let's try, just for fun". And EVERY year, my husband makes fun of me, BECAUSE THEY ALL SPROUT. And I get a bunch of, "you do this every year, are you ever gonna learn?" from him. The only thing, and I mean the ONLY thing I haven't had luck with is old onion family seeds. I keep my seeds in ziplock baggies, some are also already in mylar bags too, and keep them cool, dry, and in the dark in shoeboxes on the pantry floor downstairs. I don't know if I'm just lucky or what. Keeping them alive, healthy, and growing after sprouting however, is another story entirely. I do like your choice of pruners. I have a bunch of el cheapo plastic ones, and if a person is serious about gardening, get a good set. You get what you pay for. I'm buying a set like that this spring. My other ones have annoyed me for the last time. :)

Good morning Jeff. I have been watching your videos and I have plans to put in more veg beds. I am in the process of purchasing grow lights but omg there are so many out there. I have come across a option of a 4’ 48watt, T8 tube with 6300lm/ 6500k. Strength of the lumens and k’s sounds great, but it does not say full spectrum. It states output is cool white. I remember years ago if you mixed a cool with a warm you would get a full spectrum. But a cool by itself was a no no. I know things have changed since then but I am concerned about that “ cool” word. If the k is high does that make the cool output ok? Not sure whether to buy these, but they are the strongest I can find so far. Help🙏
@TheRipeTomatoFarms Жыл бұрын
Hi Michele, thanks for watching! Yeah, I hate the marketing terms like "cool" or "warm"....they are just never accurate. 6500K should be good. Put it REAL close to the plants, unless its putting off crazy heat. Supplement with window light if you can. I think it should work provided the price is right.
