Lead flexes well with the metal without cracking…. if you are slightly low on an edge or body line, lead provides a better edge that body filler…..
We use especially in classic car restorations lead, it is more traditional and should last longer.

If you know how to use lead it will last slot longer than plastic, it also won't pop or crack if the panel gets damaged after the repair, but yea in most cases body filler is easier to do well but lead will be better if you are good

@@georgealmeida7382 No. If you have pitting you put led filling. That's better than cutting and welding a new piece.
@georgealmeida7382
@georgealmeida7382 2 жыл бұрын
When I weld in a piece it requires zero filler other than primer at most and heats the metal less than you do using lead so your actually making the surrounding area worse by using lead.. Also you can control the reaction of steel with heat and also how quickly you cool it after it's been heated almost anything you can fill with lead I can make perfect with nothing other than proper heat andits placement and the rate of cooling ..iin other words a torch a water hose and a hammer ...will do a lot of bodywork in the right hands . Last time I checked new metal and zero filler was better than pitted metal filled with lead so I beg to differ but if your not skilled enough to weld in pieces and without having to use filler afterwards then ya go ahead and use lead .Ive never left any distortion that could not be flattened with nothing more than couple coats of primer but manipulators of metal with the skills needed to do do that are few and far between these days. so far in the last 40 yrs there hasn't been any sheet metal part Could not duplicate by hand the same or even better than the original. There are bodymen ,tinsmiths ,blacksmiths, forgers and fabricators( me)..all others will have to either replace it or fill it.

There was a good reason why we, car repair men stopped using the lead in auto repair, poisonous and not healthy. I just hope you had a high quality mask and safety glasses. It's not about technic what you use. Anyway, lead repair is not effective and under it easy to have corrosion what you won't see. Again, the industry evolved a lot for the better and the best side. At lest, in Europe. :)

@buckhorncortez

Leadless body solder is available. That's what I use. The difference is in the amount of time you have to work the solder (push it around with the paddle). The leadless solder has a much narrower temperature range where it stays malleable compared to lead solder, so you have to modify your technique.

What are the dangers of lead and it what forms, do you have any idea? 1) Some one shoots u with a rifle or pistol, thats lead poisoning. Statisticaly your greatest risk. 2) your a led worker creating shielding for scientific research and medical exrays( guess you think we're all pos even though that early saved your ass). For lead workers there are rules for time on task and consumption of calcium products. This mans exposure is low unless he does that exclusively 8 hours a day. Yet his risk is diminished because he is not using lead at a fermenting point. He is using lead tin aloy of a 40 60 or 50 50 variety. The dropping point is much lower and the flux is a marginally greater hazard. He is doing little to care for himself and he is working hard but not organized. He is posing no danger to you. In your home lead is included in beneficial ways. In modern plumbing though, the joining of copper pipes with lead tin soldier has been replaces with silver tin alloys. 40 years ago, thee heat flo characteristics of this material were different and at first negative, but within a week these characteristics were positive. The elephant in the room over lead, is lead oxide. Lead oxides are hell on human health systems. Primarily neurological. Prior to WW2, many paints were mixed on site. Various oils were used as the still are used even in water based paint. Commonly used was Turps (turpentine) linseed oil and tongue oil. To make paint, the painter would measure in whiting. Best for the buck was lead oxide. You could use titanium oxide back then..it was not available. You could use gyp and other materials. However lead was best. People in Holmes with these superior paint products who did not maintain their property, had their babies eating paint flakes. Shebang instant intellectually. Disabled child. B4 you run your fucking mouth again, study learn and know what the fuck your talking about. Maybe ask 3 or 4 intelligent, industrially minded elders. I don't know where you want to go. If it's engineering, industry or history shut the fuck up and study hard, we all did. If your a political blowhard idiot, go sit on a beaver stump, no matter how hard the wind blows, you'll be fine.

@@janeblogs324 No! 20 years ago was never pure lead, never. The alloys of 60/40 and 50/50 lead amalgams have a lower dropping point than lead, or either metal for that point. Near pure lead can be found in bullets, Lead wool for packing cast iron hub and spigot fittings and for flashing tile roofs, Akin are other amalgams and alloys like copper lead shhet for metal roofing. any and all your fear of lead is ignorance and kinda 'wish did not live on planet earth". we are given so many unique resources to exploit, explore and understand. study some science b 4 you listen to bullshit. odds are on u would not exist today save 4 xrays, radiation and Curry. shut the flap, read study, go read again and study....rinse and repeat/
