Modal Mixture is the use of multiple scales that share a common tonal center. Traditionally, we only use modes of the Major Scale but in the jam track video that accompanies this, I include other non-modal options as well.
Even if some of this stuff is too advanced for you, I encourage you to turn on the track and play along with the notes on the screen- even simple melodies and movements can sound very pleasing over this chord progression.

Yeah I was thinking the same, and decided to experiment to see if I could find a nice way to utilize it. Seems like Lydian to Locrian could work very well since they both have the tritone above the root and the shift from major to diminished in the root chords is also pretty tasty. That flat 2nd in Locrian is also always fun. On the other hand, playing in Dorian #11 instead of Locrian over the diminished chord also sounds super cool.

I played guitar for over 15 years, and did my best to learn by ear. I got so good at one point I was able to transcribe solos from dimebag Darrell randy Rhodes by ear. But I could never tell you much about music theory, modal interchange or anything like that. I always had my own theories about how things worked, and this video really just blew me away. How did I never venture out? Learn this stuff at a younger age? I always thought music theory was too expensive growing up or that everything that I wanted to learn would eventually come to me either through practicing or watching old guitar tutorials on how to play.

You frequently make me smile. There's just so much emotion in what you play, and I especially noticed it in this video. At the one part, the simple drum pattern lined up so nicely with your example, and it just felt like it should've been in a song. It makes me feel like I would really enjoy being the drummer in your band if you would ever write solos that you could play the same way every time, even though I feel like you're a big fan of improv. You should definitely write more full-length songs that we can buy.

This reminds me of what I call the Radiohead chord change (I'm aware they aren't the only band to use it but it's literally everywhere in their discography). Where you either change the "gender" of the chord. Example: in Creep the last 2 chords are both C but it changes from C major to C minor. Or when you start with a minor chord and resolve down one semi tone but with a major chord.

Nay.. E locrian would not sound locrian on Am.. Phrygian?
@SignalsMusicStudio
@SignalsMusicStudio 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, if you play in E Locrian you'd essentially be playing in A Phrygian. Still though, the F really clashes with the major tonality you're setting up over the E major. Unless you go full phyrgian dominant, it's hard to make a b2 work over this jam track, and even then it doesn't quite jive right. I've experimented with these two chords for hours, there's a lot of possibilites!

@@SignalsMusicStudio why not?? it;s just a note....all 12 notes work. Geeeze dude ...so much for putting the phrygian dominant into use..FFS I'd play that bitch dim and augmented too...I dont give a FFFFFFK.lmao Music is like women....You hit on one or two...Make one cream and the other scream..then On to the next....Freaky chicks. Emo chicks. Even good girl ..Shit dude. sometimes I hit on all of them before Im out the door and on my way home. lol hmmmm...them so call alter MODES Mix #2, #4...... Loc b4 phry b4 loc b4, bb6 #4 #4, #5 #2. #4, #5 b3, #4, #5 There;s even a #3, #4. #5 what about the modes from the egmatic scales? Harmonic min b2....Melodic min b2....or the double harmonic minor? Harmonic min b5 Melodic min b5 Lydian dominant b2 They're just preludes to the FULL diminished (WH/HW) yes...yes. I know you can stack b3 every b3 but you can also do MAJOR or DOMINANT every b3 Then there's the messiane Modes. ( 9 -ea)

Signals Music Studio yes, my commentary was a bit premature.. you mention not wanting to use Phrygian later for this, and it makes sense why.. extremely tasty phrasing Jake!

@@mysterybotts it's too time consuming. There's cool backing tracks with more darker you can solo over...just search under Harmonic MAJOR..but he'll have other progression. You can also serach under satta32. He list most of the scales (less the melodic min b5) with fretboard diagrams...but he's not there to explain to you. So You must grasp the basic . There's plenty of video and lessons on axis pitch modulation The Satch just plays different ones and call them out by names.lmao I can give you a list of the 9 diatonic parallel scales where the modes derive from. There's 63 modes. 7 modes -ea from each scale. Pushing down from MAJOR towards minor b6 Harmonic MAJOR b3 melodic min b3, b6 Harmonic min b3, b6, b7 b2, b3............or b2, b3, b6 b3, b5 or b3, b5, b6 b3, #4 or b3, #4, b6 The b3, #4 is just Lydian b3 or IV mode of Harmonic MAJOR You can reverse the process..Push up towards towards MAJOR... but from it's relative minor....The different scales will intersect more. The more scales/mode you know...the easier it'll be for you to find different ways to modulate. b3, b6, b7 b3, b6 b3 b6 example...using the A lydian b3 = E Harmonic MAJOR B min to E min or B7 into E MAJOR or E min E min to A min or E7 into A MAJOR or A min Or WITHOUT even knowing modes.... There;s lessons on playing INTO arpeggios...(using other instruments.lol) I'll keep it simple..... 1, b3, 5. play a semi tone below into the arppegio as you ascend maj7 , R,............2, b3.............#4, 5.............Maj7 , R when you decesend.....play a semi tone above b9 into Octive...........b6 into 5............Maj3 into b3.....b2 into Root Then you simple use different combo ( lets do maj for kicks) a semi tone below....then a whole step above..back to maj7 into Root. Then the same pattern on the next arpeggio, 1, 3, 5 7 2 7 R b3 #4 b3 3 #4 6 #4 5 Then reverse it....... b9, b7, b9, Octive b6 4, b6 5 4, 2, 4, 3 b2, b7, b2, R Just use the concept ...make your own patterns

This is by far the best lesson I've ever received. KZbin or in person. You're BY FAR the best guitar teacher on youtube, you dive into theory for advanced players but also explain it for newbies. You explain all of the useful concepts and how to apply them. I have a whole concept album I'm trying to write and half of the songs are just me experimenting with all the tools you give. Thank you so much

I’ve been watching everyone on KZbin trying to explain modes. They all ramble and ramble. Then there is you. Well done my friend, and thank you. Really not that complicated the way you demonstrate.

This is probably one of my favorite guitar lessons ever. I love how he plays examples of the concept he just brilliantly explained, but doesn’t do much vibrato, instead he plays all sorts of techniques, easier to understand but still soulful. Really nice.

You're such a nice teacher! Others show off their skill and play all this advanced stuff without explaining step by step so you just feel daunted by the whole thing. You just are really nice and only play something that applies to what you're teaching! Thanks so much man, keep making these videos!
