Mark, How do you focus with 9 stop filter? I use a 10 stop filter for ocean and water falls which give a very silky effect on the moving water with multiple minute exposure, but I have to set up the shot and focus before I put on the filter. I can see nothing through the filter. Thanks, Ron

@tamim4ever What the light meter is trying to show u is that u need to set to a smaller aperture f/64 as the light gets stronger when u move closer to it. Of course Dslr lens don't have f64, so need to either use higher ISO, or move the light further, or set the light to lesser power.

hey..i have a question..when you shot with the ND 9Stop filter..how your camera is going to focus??? isn`t that hard for the camera to focus? Cheers
@happyhc12 жыл бұрын
I am wondering how focus was done when using a NDx400 filter. Will the camera still able to auto-focus? Or you pre-focus without ND filter and then put on the filter?

Great video as usual Mark. I did notice one thing though, at 6:18 on the right side of the frame, you can see just a little of the model's shadow near the bottom of the wall. I'm curious, is that due to light falloff from the strobe being up high, and shooting down? Or, was there a grid attached to the strobe? Thanks very much!
@KenCheng13 жыл бұрын
will there be a big difference in quality between a cheaper ND filter and a high end one?
@AndrewYianne12 жыл бұрын
How were you able to get the "warm light" from your strobe in the indoor studio? Was your white balance set to cloudy, or was post-processing in Lightroom?

@tamim4ever F/64 for flash means the flash output will be many stops brighter to light the subject since the ND filter is limiting the light reaching the camera's sensor by several stops.
@tomwojmusic12 жыл бұрын
@tomwojmusic hmm actually thinking about it, is it because that's the speed at which the flash goes off? So any higher or lower shutter speed would make the flash and camera not go off at the same time?
@essellar12 жыл бұрын
@tamim4ever A "stop" is a doubling or a halving of the light entering the camera. The f-number is the ratio of the lens's focal length to the diameter of the opening (aperture). The amount of light depends on the area of the opening, and the formula for the area of a circle is πr²; to double the area, you need to increase the diameter by a factor of √2 (or about 1.4). So the f-numbers going down would be 64→45→32→22→16→11→8→5.6→4→2.8. (The numbers are rounded values.)

Also on a serious note: Can you do some tutorials on buying advice when it comes to strobes and light modifiers? I am a student from the UK so I have a budget of around £200 which I believe would be approx $300 I want to know which are the basics to buy and how I can use them and then how I can build up my set! Am I stuck to dedicate myself to 1 brand like with camera bodies!
@tamimaflah13 жыл бұрын
@cadmiumpureland thank you, so glad you replied, but what is the f-stops "aperture" which is "bigger number the smaller aperture the less light" ?!
@minkorrh11 жыл бұрын
I was going to ask the same question....if he's using a 9 stop ND filter you can't even see through that. I would say that's only practical with a variable ND no? (focus then twist to dark?)
@tomwojmusic12 жыл бұрын
I'm new to photography so this might be a stupid question, but why can't you just up the shutter speed? When mark was outside he stated that his shutter speed was 160 odd to sync with the flash, why not just forget the nd filter and max the shutter speed?
@Ryder_Studios10 жыл бұрын
What was the shutter speed when Mark lowered it to below sync speed? Those were awesome shots!

I would love it if every episode was titled like this "Using ND Filters With Strobes: Ep 212: Digitial Photography 1 on 1: Adorama Photography TV" rather than how previous episodes are titled which are more like "Digital Photography 1 on 1: Ep 212: Using ND Filters with Strobes: Adorama Photography TV" Because it makes archiving and finding older episodes SOOO much easier =D

Canon 5D mkII Xsync speed is 1/200th. To those saying that 1/4,000 or 1/8,000th can't be used just try it. The strobe freezes the action not the shutter speed. Studio strobes have a very short flash duration in the range of 1/10,000th to 1/30,000th or less! Shutter speeds over 1/100th are irrelevant when using strobes during portraiture.

@TheSisterPrincess Some cameras are set for every 2 clicks is one stop or every 3 clicks is one stop. Another way of saying it is some will let you adjust the aperture in 1/2 stop increments or 1/3 stop increments, sometime this can be selected in the camera.If you dont know how your is setup you can check it by setting the camera to f4,if you have to turn the dial 2 times to get to f5.6 yours is setup for one turn of the dial is 1/2 stop.If you turn it 3 times to get to f5.6 i turn is 1/3 stop.
@cadmiumpureland13 жыл бұрын
@tamim4ever For flash/strobe, full power will be indicated as 1 (brightess)on the display. 1/2 will be 1 stop less bright. 1/4 is a stop lesser than 1/2.......... But if you use a light meter, it will show you in terms of f-stops. Like for example, you meter closer to the strobe, it gives you F64; mete further away, it will gives u f32, because light is less bright as it travel further.

@riahmatic12 жыл бұрын
To be accurate, the main stops are 1 / 1.4 / 2 / 2.8 / 4 / 5.6 / 8 / 11 / 16 / 22 / 32. You multiply each stop by the square root of 2 to get the next stop.

what about the picture quality wont this filter hamper the picture quality, compared to that coming directly from lens without using the filter???
@forisnakiu13 жыл бұрын
@tamim4ever it`s simple, 9 stops less means starting down from f64, f32, f22, f16, f11, f8, f5,6, f4 to finally f2,8.

Hi Mark, just wanted to check regarding using an ND2 filter instead of a Lens Hood to block out light from the sides. All that I would need to do would be to set the exposure up by 1 stop (on Aperture or Shutter Priority) and it would be like using a lens hood to block the stray light from the sides. isn't it???? Would this work.

Is one increament/decreament of aperture equal 1 stop?
@guidlines13 жыл бұрын
@tamim4ever Roughly, you do it like this - the square root (SQRT) of 2 is 1.4, SQRT of 4 is 2, SQRT of 8 is 2.8, SQRT of 16 is 4, SQRT of 32 is 5.6, SQRT of 64 is 8, SQRT of 128 is 11 etc. What you do is double the previous number & then get it's SQRT.
@MichaelSchultzPersonal12 жыл бұрын
@tamim4ever The stops go like this: 1.4 / 1.8 / 2.8 / 3.2 / 4 / 5.6 / 8 / 11 / 16 / 22 / 32. Notice how f 5.6 is 2 x 2.8, f8 is 2 x f4. Half your f stop and that tells you what 2 f stops brighter is. You used to have to click these stops on your lenses in the film days.

sorry guys, I really got confused here, as far as I know about f-stop is that the bigger number the smaller aperture the less light, so how come F/64 is extremely bright ?! what's the difference between the f-stop shows in studio flash and speedlight and the aperture of the dslr ?!

@tomwojmusic if you try double it 9 times... from 1/160th you get 1. 1/320 2, 1/640 3. 1/1280, 4. 1/2500 and what now? if your camera does only 1/4000th fastest? ... and maybe the ISO is too fast too.. some camera cant do 50 iso or 100 iso..only 200-1600 .... but even if you can make ur shutter fast enough (for exapmple if you use only 3 stop ND) still your light source (the sun) is "fix" you cannot move it around to get different angles, etc.
