Good afternoon Jamal, I remember when you were here in Rio de Janeiro - RJ, in Brazil at that unforgettable music conference at Pastor Emerson Pinheiro's church. I was in the first row right in front of the keyboard you used and I even talked to you, I gave you a CD of mine, you used a Yamaha Motif XS8 from our friend Renato. That event was a wonderful blessing and I was on the first and third day in the front row. I am a big fan of your beautiful musical work and with you I learned urban chords. Never stop making your videos, your sound is blessed and spectacular, even today I was watching a video of your oldest with the sounds of electric pianos and crystals. May JESUS CHRIST bless you and your family always.

Jamal and i carry the same style of playing. Relative minors help a lot. In this case, in C the theatrical trick thats been used for sometime now is walking up the Ab-Bb then resolve to C, but if you stay on Ab the relative minor is Fminor which can be used to resolve back to C major because the four wants to resolve back to the root. If you stay on Eb you can always walk down to Dm9 or something and resolve that back to the root. AbM7 has Cminor outlined in that chord which works...but i think what Jamal is playing is a Ab #4/b5 M7 chord. Im glad im not the only one using these chords.

Actually you borrowed from the relative MAJOR*. If you go up a minor 3rd it gives you the relative major, the relative minor is found by going down a minor 3rd or up a major 6th. The relative minor for C is A natural minor. And the concept your trying to explain is called MODAL INTERCHANGE...... You can quote me too, going into my senior year of music with a concentration in jazz studies and was forced to learn classical theory along side your normal jazz theory:) But it I’ve been watching you videos since I was about 10 and they’ve helped me get to where I am now! Much love✊🏾

Thank you Jamal for this. I think it will be nice to do a video on keyboard voicing. What are your voice combination that brings about those lovely lushness in your sound. Even if people get what you are trying to teach them, without the right voicing it won’t just sound right. This is what Sunday sounds is doing. By the way I bought your pure synths. You can incorporate this into your pure synths by having a presets for this that has different combination of sounds for say worship, praise, preacher’s chord, funk, jazz, r n b, soul, etc. If people get hold of mixing the right sound together then it easy for them to play around with using yours as a template. I have pure synths but I used Sunday Sounds for worship atmosphere but It will be nice to see yours in pure synths. Thanks

Wow, Modal Interchange in a nutshell, baby! Playing with borrowed chords while maintaining the tonal center, super cool, loving that. I have also applied this 3rd as parallel when playing simple blues, so C-F-G becomes C-Eb-F-G - C-Eb-Ab-G and combined in both ways as well. Anyways, thanks a bunch for your videos, Maestro!
