This is such an amazing tool. And thanks for sharing your template! My one change/update I’ve done so far, is since I generally keep the Characters page up the majority of the game, I’ve also dropped in some screenshots of often used tables and links to Conditions and Skills and basically turned that page into a basic digital DM screen for myself.

This is far and away the most flexible DM organizational tool I have ever encountered. Thank you for sharing it and your methodology. Without your template, it likely would have been too overwhelming to pick up, but your structure aligned to your checklist makes it really easy to understand. Thank you! One thing I added to the template was a resources database. This lets me quickly find encounters, items, rules or NPCs etc. that I have found on KZbin, or other sites. I organize them by type and by level of PC they would best be suited to. With a quick search, I can get some quick ideas to prep for the next adventure - definitely a LazyDM hack.

Great video! I've adapted your template for my own campaigns awhile back. One trick for inline database creations is to make templates for your campaign database. When you select "new page in", you can type the name of the template (e.g., "NPC template") and it will place the page inside your database. I make sure the templates have the tags set, and include other prompts relevant to the entry. Though, this method is harder the more games you run, since it can be hard to differentiate templates between campaigns.

Interesting! I'll have to try this out.
@MZeller

Another way, without templates or dragging the page to the database, is to just navigate to the page and while pasting a picture...assign the filtered tag and it will fall "inline."

Perfect! Am five sessions deep into my very first campaign both as a DM and in D&D in general (nobody in my group played TTRPGs before), and slowly the paper sheets are mounting up :D It'll be a bit of work to move everything into Notion, but I think having an organised digital system will be worth it in the long run (I have my laptop to the side when playing anyways to track encounters in Owlbear Rodeo, so even if my players play Theatre of the Mind I don't forget where everyone is, and to have the Lazy GM Workbook + Companion PDFs and a few other tools open). We are having a blast by the way, and KZbinrs like you, your tools and especially your books helped me a lot to make the rather boring Dragons of Icespire Peaks campaign into something completely my own just a few sessions deep already! I'm making my own props, twisting monster stats and reskinning them, improvising NPCs and sprinkle in secrets and clues to guide my players with bread crumbs without railroading them (I think). Would've needed much much longer to arrive at such advanced techniques without you and other content creators. Just wanted to say thanks for that! :)

Started using this app because of this video. I added custom templates on the database page so I can populate entries directly to it and not need to go to the corresponding page. I basically listed the entire LMOP campaign as tagged entries into those templates and now it only takes me 15-25 mins to fill out the Session Planning Template for the session I'm about to do. Super stress relieving cause I can then see the connections of things via the links tied to the entries. I also added a page that is populated with playlists. I'm planning to also add templates based from Baron De Ropp's (Dungeon Masterpiece) channel so I can create homebrew's quickly and with great detail which would also help me to integrate it to Hexcrawls. I'm a relatively new DM so I might be biting off more than I can chew but, this is why I don't mind being the Forever DM. Thank you Sly Flourish!

So glad you made this video, as I’ve been meaning to start using Notion as a tool for this very purpose. Thank you! While I’m discovering this video pretty late, I’m wondering what virtual desktop you use to actually run your games? Roll20? Fantasy Grounds? Or do you use Notion and then broadcast your screen? I’m curious to know how you convert your DM prep material into what you use to actually run your sessions (to avoid too much duplicate work). Thanks again. You rock.

This looks like a great tool. The thing I've been probably enjoying the most with the switch to roll20, is the way it allows me to organize my prep. This looks like a good way to carry that over offline. The only problem is that so far I am not using a laptop while running in-person. Yes, it's possible. When adding a tag (like a skill), the list of tags pops up. That window allows you to do different things, like add another tag or reorder the list of tags. But if you click the three dots on the right of a tag, you can rename the tag and/or change the tag's color.

Love your work Mike. Is there any chance of you ever releasing "Fantastic Adventures" with Notion files ready to use, with links and images and everything all set up. Whenever I run a prepared adventure I copy and paste a lot of the text into a formattable document and then put links in, highlight DCs, etc so that it's easy to see and modify information in-game. If that was already done for me, I'd be wrapped. Also if fans did that work and shared it with each other would you feel that they were ripping off your work?

Thanks for both your book and your review of Notion. I was looking for a World Building tool, and your examples showed me that it is a great option for now. I DO HAVE A QUESTION: Why do you use a single "Campain Database" instead of one for Location, one for Characters, one for Villains , etc? By doing so, you'd export and have everything split, plus, if you want different properties per type, you'd be able to set them.

Niche question, and might be hard to describe in depth on here. But on the character pages, you're able to display the Character ability scores using what I assume is the web bookmark, when I use my characters' player page link, the image preview is just a DND banner. Any way I can get it to display character scores like you did?

Great video Mike thanks for sharing! Has anyone figured out a way how to do secrets on a database page in notion. Would like to do is have a single entry for an NPC have their picture and then have my private notes as a DM and then the public notes that the players will be able to see along with the picture on a page that I share out. Was trying to use sync blocks through this but didn't seem like it was working and wonder if anyone had any ideas.

It can certainly be done but I don’t recommend it. Secrets are meant to be written and tossed between sessions. Hanging on too tight makes things harder to prep.

Amazing -- Notion, Graphviz, Discord, and Owlbear Rodeo all blew my socks off and have changed the way I approach the game! QUESTION: I love the dark display you have, and would love to emulate. How can we also darken our views of Notion?

Notion has a dark mode in settings once you log in.

Is there anyway you could do a new tutorial that shows all of the new stuff since you made this video. One thing I'm having an issue with is using the 5e Artisanal Monster Database and having a video would be extremely helpful. If this is already been done then I may have missed it.

For the bookmarks you used under each of the character's description - how did you get the bookmark to display the names of your characters and the picture of the character sheet? Mine just show's "dnd beyond character sheet" and general dragon photo. Thanks!

It seems to be a known issue with the dnd beyond shareable link previews. The reason the name and picture are present on the example characters is that they were cached by Notion at the time of import

What about world anvil? How those two compare if you have an opinion? I am looking for something easy for all me notes and papers... this seems like easy and practical , I didn’t know this notion thing and was looking worldanvil first but now I am confused on witch one to chose. Thanks anyway, you are really helpful.

I haven't spent near the same time with World Anvil. People will have to try them for themselves! I know World Anvil has the ability to annotate a map which is huge. I wish Notion had that.

I wonder, would you recommend Notion to use as a player? Your DM campaign template looks a bit overkill for a player but I want to organize the npcs I meet and other things like that by location.

I use it as a player and I have two other members of two groups who both use it in the games they play in. Keeping up notes is a great way not to get distracted during the game.

How would you use something like this to help your players track quests? Could you share a portion of the pages or something for them? Is that possible?

this has been such an amazing tool but im having a problem and cant find an answer. i use your premade data base and am trying to add a guilds/group page that i can auto link things into. but i cant figure out how you did it with NPCs, items and villians. can you help?
@SlyFlourish
@SlyFlourish 2 жыл бұрын
You add a new tag called “group” or “guild”. Then you make a new page with a filtered view of the main database on it filtered to show only entries that have guild or group. You might also clone one of the existing views and change the filter. Hope that helps!

Notion has internal linking (with automatic back linking), templates you can set up, search functions and filters for the database entries and their properties, gallery views and images.. so if these things look good to you, yeah I would. Been using it to keep player notes for 4 different campaigns I'm in. Can also make pages public so others can see them in a browser if you give the link.

@@SlyFlourish So I've started digging into Notion and I'm really liking it. Makes my word docs. seem draconic. Question though... So if I'm assembling a table of PCs and want to write in their Race/Class and other aspects of their character how do I link that set of text to the page I have for Dwarf, Elf, Cleric, Paladin etc...?

Ok, not trying to sound stupid here, but when say copy the template off your website into Notion, are you saying copy-paste into Notion or are you saying recreate your template in Notion? If it’s the former, I’m having great difficulty because the the “pages” are just links to your Notion info (e.g., not the actual database template). Notion is new to me, I’ve watched the suggested videos, but I haven’t found that allows me to import your template into my Notion.

How well do Notion's share permissions work for giving players access to view some things, but not see secret things? Does anyone have experience with using it that way?

You can do this. I haven't because it's too hard to write pages expecting only players to read them.

Until recently, you could set a page to be public and all subpages would be included but now you can set each individual page's permission seperately.
