very nice display/commentary on varieties of types & applications of these supplies... while dirt cheap, pentel & crayola oil pastels give me freedom to create/wreck pieces for practice without preciousness... Mont martre makes a cheap water soluble oil pastel which ii love playing with; neo 1's & 2's mix well with everything, & lately ii've been layering pan pastels over oil pastels to "seal" each to the other (the oil doesn't stick & the powder doesn't 'bleed'), though ii still use spectrafix as a sealer & add a sheet of deli paper down til I I'm certain there's no transfer or smudging...though that may happen if ii'm heavy handed on nearby pages... ii have the semi jumbo mungyo (mung, like the bean, yo like yo-yo) oil pastels for large mark making & backgrounds over watercolor or water based markers, lovely to scribble with & add details w/other finer point pastels or even with a pallet knife.

Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge with me! I have a couple of pan pastels…I’m going to experiment! And I do have my eye on a couple of oil pastel sets (not that I need them😅)…do your recommendations are handy. I made the video to dispel the assumption that oil pastels can’t be incorporated into our mixed media art (I’ve heard that a lot) so hopefully more artists will try them out. PS you’re so knowledgeable, you should be making your own tutorial on oil pastels 😊 Happy creating 🤩

Sennelier "Test Pack" is a very good value. It contains 6 colors and the price per piece is lower than for the set of 12, at least in the store where I got it. I suppose Sennelier does this on purpose to make it appealing for first time buyers. I honestly never was a fan of oil pastels and gave mine away, but I thought Senneliers might go well on top of my Neocolor 2s, which are my absolute favorite pastels.

I bought Portfolio 24 oil pastels in September on Amazon for $10.02 after you had recommended them. They are amazing! I’m so thankful you spoke of them. Mungyo makes a set of 24 water soluble oil pastels (as well as a 24 set of metallic water soluble oil pastels) which compare very well to the Portfolios. They might be more readily available everywhere then the Portfolios. I got my Portfolios in the US - never saw them here in Quebec, but i did see them in BC once

The general rule is you cannot paint acrylic over oil. I see you doing this (over oil pastels) but I understand that acrylic over oil may not adhere over the oil and could flake off days or weeks later…and that it may impede the oil from oxidizing and drying properly leading to problems too. My understanding is oil and acrylic can be side by side, oil can be placed over acrylic but not the other way around. Not sure if this applies to oil pastels but wondered what you experience was over the longer term? Thanks.
@sorayanulliah18 күн бұрын
Hi Carol…thank you so much for bringing up these issues/concerns. You’re absolutely correct in that, if you’re worried about preservation of your art, you should not layer acrylic over oil pastels. However, I’m working in my art journal so it’s not an issue for me. As far as I know, oil pastels don’t need to oxidize because oil pastels don’t fully dry anyway so the acrylic over top won’t prevent it (hope this makes sense). I’ve not had a problem in my art journal with flaking off etc but if I did, it would just add to the page and not cause me any concern. Also, in my video I said I can put a small amount of acrylic over top of the pastel but I wouldn’t smoosh it together. I’ve done that in my art journals and haven’t had an issue…I seal the page with mod Podge a couple of times so maybe that helps? There are also various fixatives specifically for oil pastels but I haven’t tried them. I’m going to make a video next week-ish on using oil pastels in my first layers (usually they are used at the very end) and I will address these concerns. Thanks so much for bringing them up, I think there’s so much valuable info that I can put in my video. Thanks again for bringing up these concerns…welcome to my channel, thanks for watching my video and happy creating 🤗
@sorayanulliah18 күн бұрын
PS Also, when I use oil pastels in my first layers, I tend to use a lot of dry media like my Stabilo, Inktense pencils, graphite etc. And when I do add the acrylic it tends to be a wash…I’m probably not making any sense but hopefully when I make the video, I can explain it better!

While this combination might be fine for journals and fun experiments, using anything acrylic over oil/wax pastels is not archival, so it's not recommended for art intended for sale or gifts. It's the same with colored pencils (non-water-soluble ones), as well as graphite. "Archival" means it should last decades without deteriorating. It's possible people might not notice any changes or damage in 5 years, but it can still happen later on.
@vishneva200017 күн бұрын
To elaborate on some suggestions in the video, oil pastels are permanently "live." So as Soraya suggests, you can put a sheet of wax paper between the pages when working with them. Wanted to add that when you are finished, though, you can spray it with fixative like Krylon or Sennelier has a spray specifically for oil pastels. Sennelier also has special oil pastel pads that have wax paper between each page.
@sorayanulliah17 күн бұрын
Hi there! Thank you for watching my video and for your valuable information. I had no idea Sennelier made pads with wax paper 🤩 I’m going to make another video sometime next week addressing some of the questions and concerns regarding oil pastels & I’ll include this important piece of info! I tend not to use fixatives over top of the oil pastels because they can flatten out the colors. Plus it’s in my art journals which are pretty much always a work in progress so I don’t mind the smudges etc. Thank you for being here, for leaving a comment and welcome to my channel 😊

Hi there…thanks so much for watching my video & subscribing to my channel…welcome! About fixing the oil pastels…I don’t fix them if I use them in my last layer but I use mod Podge if I’m using them in my beginning layers. If you want to protect your work, you should use a fixative …I’m using them in my art journals so it’s not a priority for me. From what I understand, for artists who create with oil pastels and sell their work, it has to be fixed and framed behind glass etc. I’m going to make another video on oil pastels and I’ll talk about these issues. Thanks for being here🤗
