Using Olla Pots in the Garden at the Urban Homestead

Justin shows you how to use the Olla (Oy-ya) Pots (unglazed clay pots) to help water your plants in tubs or raised garden beds. They're a great way to irrigate and were an ancient watering technique that delivers water directly to the roots.
The use of buried earthen jars for watering plants has been used for thousands of years. The hand-thrown unglazed pot is buried neck deep into the soil, fill the pot with water and it slowly seeps into the soil to be absorbed by surrounding plants (not for use around wood plants such as shrubs and trees).

hello, great video, I have some questions. do you have drainage holes in the bottom of the containers in case it rains? what's your soil mix? do you do most of your growing in containers? and if so what advantages do you find they have?

Yes, we use drainage holes. We don't get that much rain in southern CA, but we still use them to make sure the plants don't drown. We have a homestead specific made soil mix recipe that is a family secret. We start seeds in soil blocks and most of the farm is in either raised garden beds or containers. Some plants do better on one side of the house verses another, making it easier to move them until the plant tells us where it wants to grow and thrive.

We're in Southern California, so we don't get rain often enough to be concerned with drainage needs, but if your climate calls for more regular rain, we'd recommend it. We have a secret family recipe for soil. Because we're going on 1/10 of an acre, most of our growing is in containers, even vertical containers which allow us to grow more on a small lot.
