An Outsideback/fullback/wingback is often the most open guy in possession when building play from your own goal. We want passes to the OB to break the midfield line with a 2nd line pass (passing around) or inside out pass.
Sometimes the OB receives a pass when they are guarded by the opposing team’s winger. We have to be careful here because the SIDELINE SQUEEZE is dangerous! (B) Sometimes they can turn but don’t have room to dribble. We can use the pass down the line to the winger, but someone (midfielder or striker) needs to show for the wall pass. The winger must explosively work back to the ball here.
(C) Other times, the OB gets a pass where they can not turn. They can play outside-in to the DCM if he’s open. Usually they will have to play back to the center back. It’s super important that both centerbacks quickly work to change their position in this situation. The nearside centerback must drop deeper behind the ball and the farside centerback must work to give an angle for the pass. This way, we 2v1 an opposing striker and can switch play
