I used Player Ratings to find the Greatest Individual Season of any AFL Player since 2012!
Watch my AFL Charts Video here:
• Charts That Will Chang...
Did Lachie Neale from the Brisbane Lions really deserve the 2023 Brownlow Medal?
Is Nick Daicos from the Collingwood Magpies the Best Young Player Of All Time?
Who is the Best Player between Gary Ablett from Gold Coast, Dustin Martin from Richmond, Patrick Dangerfield from Geelong, Nat Fyfe from Fremantle, and Lance Franklin from Hawthorn?
We answered all those questions in this video!

Imagine if Gaz stayed at the cats his whole career. Really was a shame he wasted those years trying to carry a whole team on his busted shoulders. The GOAT had plenty but definitely deserved more.

I think it's fairly apparent that forwards are at a clear disadvantage. Either posession is over rated or goals are under rated. They're much harder to get than they used to be. IMO a 6 goal game now is the equivalent of a bag of 10 in the 90's or early 00's.

I wish there was ratings for prior seasons. I remember watching 08 Ablett thinking it was the best individual season I’d seen. It could’ve just been the fact people weren’t sure whether 07 was a flash in the pan year but he backed that up. I rated that higher than 09. That said it may be one of those ones where compared to other seasons it’s not high but it was the best that year. (Assuming he was) Other interesting years as well would be Riewoldt in 09, Hird 03. All that said, prior to the high possession games from the 05 Eagles and then Cats, the figures would potentially be different.

it'd be fascinating to go back in time to measure player ratings for ablett's dad. a forward [started as a winger] regarded as one of the game's greatest. but midfielders are prone to get attention as they are around the ball - defenders and forwards can only do their job if the ball comes into their zones. an extreme example of this is in football - how do you possibly compare the greatest 'keepers with outfield players? maradona vs yashin, how can that be a contest?

Even if player ratings were calculated for pre-2012, like any stat, it is difficult to compare across eras. E.g given the number of stoppages in the game nowadays, hitout/clearance numbers (and hence player ratings) of current players would be inflated. On the flip side, a greater focus on team defence has led to lower scores -> present players disadvantaged as they kick fewer goals

When it comes to statistical analysis, the brownlow should not even be talked about. It's a celebration of the best and FAIREST for the season, it's a celebration of football tradition, it's a celebration of the work the umpires do, giving them more strength as a unit than any referee in other sports. Crunching the player ranking numbers, fantasy, and possibly even trusting a AFL official has to be the best way.
@mistercallme3047

Interesting video. In regards to comparing player ratings to the brownlow vote. There will always be a difference due to how each is calculated. You could have only 10 extremely good games to win the brownlow medal and the rest of the season just stand still doing nothing, which would create a really bad player rating.

Bont had 24 diposals and 2 goals and got a match rating of 31. Bont last night had 38 disposals and 2 goals and scored a 27.3. The first game was the highest rated of the season how does that make sense ?

I think gaz's player ratings at the suns are boosted a little bit by the fact that he was a god surrounded by spuds. Dusty in 2017 was sensational in all regards of the sport, he had the highest amount of brownlow votes ever (not counting the ollie wines robbery), won the norm smith, won the grand final, best and fairest, and topped player ratings. You might argue that Gaz did it in a worse team which makes him a better player, but if you're a great player in a bad team you're going to rack up more posessions and disposals because the other players will rely on you more. Dusty did it all when surrounded with a flag winning team that had amazing players like cotchin, rance, grigg, riewoldt, prestia, nankervis etc, meanwhile gaz did it in a 12th placed gold coast team that fed him the ball all game. After re-reading that it seems like I have it out for gaz but I really don't, he was one of my heroes growing up and still is, easily in the GOAT debate for me as he was simply on another level to the rest in nearly every team he played in. I just think in 2017 dusty had a better individual season.
@srensburg133
@srensburg133 4 ай бұрын
It probably equals out a bit. Having competent teammates would give Dusty more chance to get forward and get a few snags but Ablett would’ve probably had 20 rated seasons and the next best GC was like 5 🤣 2017 Dusty was pretty special. Such a shame Danger got suspended that year cos that Brownlow race wound’ve been one of the better ones Dusty deserved it but both those seasons were elite

That’s a crazy statement. I’ve actually got no problem with you thinking Gulden is a better player, but to imply Daicos’ efficiency is worse than Gulden’s is factually wrong. Also neither is much better than the other, both are elite.

Abletts 2009 was stunning. I remember one time he got caught on the boundary by 3 players and the commentators where making some comment about trying to contain him, he just started walking backwards and then somehow against all the laws of physics created space for himself and just moved the ball forward.

The AFL is no longer a sport in my eyes, giving Neal the Brownlow last year cemented that idea that it's all just an entertainment business and no longer a sport. They will award to the best story line so the media can talk up the fairy tale. Going by your video it seems the AFL employed more people with their heads screwed on before 2015 but since then its the best story wins.
@Pocketrocketrule

You clearly have a vendetta against Neale winning last year, which is stupid. And the idiot in the comments that said that neale is the most overeated player in the league? Obviosuly doesn't understand anything about AFL. Neale is objectively one of the best players currently playing, as is Bont. I do agree though that Bont 100% deserves a Brownlow. But history has always shown that the browlow is not statsically the best player, brownlow votes get polled for so many other things than what gets shown on a data sheet.

@Winks3
@Winks3 4 ай бұрын
They're calculated by 3 main factors: - How you win the ball - Where you win the ball - How you use the ball Hence why midfielders are favoured because they're always at contests. There's probably a few more variables but they're only accessible to the stat gurus who create them.
