Using SAILS as FLAPPING WINGS To Achieve BIRD-LIKE Flight! (Trailmakers HIGH SEAS Update DLC)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey everyone! The Trailmakers gods have blessed us with a new UPDATE, EXPANSION, DLC, WHATEVER you want to call it...and it's amazing! In this awesome new update we get a large new map, four NEW unique islands, 100+ hidden treasures to collect, secret locations to uncover, stormy weather with PROPER physics, sails, new seat, and much MORE! In this episode I experiment with making flapping machines (starting with a simplified ornithopter) in order to see if we can actually fly like a bird in Trailmakers! The new sails offer a perfect opportunity for this kind of experiment so make sure to check out the video and let me know what you think of the build!
Thanks for watching the video! If you enjoyed it, make sure to like it, share it with your friends and give me your feedback in the comments below!

About Trailmakers:
Build a car, a plane, a boat or maybe a… carplaneboat? With Trailmakers intuitive builder, it is as easy as snapping together real building blocks. Take your machines on dangerous exploration missions, breakneck rally races, or go to the sandbox and build that hovercraft you have always dreamt about.
- Build intuitively with modular blocks - it is easy to get started, and the possibilities are almost infinite.
- Explore a vast open world and escape the planet in the survival game mode “Stranded in Space”
- Go on breakneck rally races with vehicles of your own making.
- Create without constraints in two sandbox maps full of jumps, half pipes, an aircraft carrier, catapults and other crazy obstacles.
- Compete on the global leaderboards in rally and race mode.
- Four player drop in drop out multiplayer game modes.
- An active and growing community with tons of premade vehicles ready to test.
- There is always something to do: Join the Trailmakers Rally, take on challenges, play in the sandbox, race your friends on the centrifuge or just pewpew each other to bits.

so, an actual bird tilts the wings so the leading edge is pointing up for the upstroke, and slightly down on the downstroke. Trailmakers seems to actually be simulating the sail shape, so the deformation of the sails is giving you a little bit of that effect, but it might help if you make the effect a little more extreme by actually tilting the whole wing like a simple ornithopter.

Real birds retract their wings wit the up stroke, and with the down stroke they open it all. Might help you to gain more lift
@beaclaster
@beaclaster 2 жыл бұрын
surely it will give less drag at the up stroke, but that would give you less forward lift
@nikkiofthevalley
@nikkiofthevalley 2 жыл бұрын
@@beaclaster That's part of the point. If you have equal drag/lift on the up and down stroke, then (in theory) you would get a net 0 upwards force. In practice, you still get a very small amount of force upwards, but it's made much more efficient when you angle the wings to decrease drag on the upwards stroke, and thus increase net upwards force. You could also change the way the wing twists slightly to cause a component of the force to go forwards, but this causes you to have less upwards force. Trying to fly like a bird is one of the most painful and finicky things I've ever attempted. I've stared at videos of birds flying for many, many hours.

I've tried to make an ornithopter before and I found that using rotating servos are faster and give it more power so maybe if you used a combination of hinges and a pair of rotating servos it might work better. By the way I made that ornithopter a while ago before the high seas update so I don't know if they changed that.

Since you're trying to make birds with sails, please do watch the video "Feather Flight - How do birds fly?" by "mekanizmalar", and consider making a bird which uses that kind of flight, to see if it works in trailmakers or not. Part of it working would be simply because the "open" position would have the sails at different angles perpendicular to the "down" position of the bird (which can differ from the actual down direction), which might push enough air for sustained flight, or at least slower or fancier gliding.

use free bearing at the front end of the front wing with limits on how much it can rotate, it would give better forward lift. or if you can't just power the bearing and rotate before the strike

try changing the angle of attack of the wings on the upstroke vs the downstroke. Angling the wings so the forward part is higher than the rearward part might give both propulsion and make the up and down strokes asymmetric with regard to their upward and downward force

Hi cosmo. To create a bird you will need a servo on the wing aiming it up and down. I have had succes even with takeoff from the ground using this method. Looks ugly but it works. All im saying is give it more time and servos and you will succeed. If i can get it to work proper i will post it w your name so you can take a look. Keep on building and have a good day! Greetings Kremmus.

I had a hard time not screaming at you ... my screen Im good in physics and done that in various games Also we have those hovering birds but here its predatorial birds over crop fields hunting rodents Edit also you know how a propellor blade is angled in sight to the direction of the rotation of the prop You need to angle the wings on the upwards motion and on the downwards motion like a prop would cut through air the birds wings do too
@chrisgloria5087

i think part of the issue that you were have was the same that you were having with the forte night glider as well you need to rotate the sails 180 degrees" so that the part of the sails that aren't connected are facing towards the back side of the creation, and you should try doing that for all your projects that use sail power!!

Would probably help to move your front and rear wings out of phase so the upward of one cancels the downward of the other. Would make it more stable overall and probably lose less to bobbing up and down. But then you'd be making a dragonfly more than a bird

And the hypotenuse of the triangle should be facing the direction that you want the thrust to go (backwards, which will push the vehicle forwards)

💡Yaw can be by turning head & body & feet can help. Spine should bend at least 2 or 3 times; @ neck, @ legs, & then @ feet. Wings should arc when raising, then, flat when power stroke. Wings also should angle up 20⁰-35⁰ during upstroke and vice versa during downstroke. Playing with those angles will get most speed. GOOD LUCK. 🧐💪🥇

Birds kinda use a figure 8 movement as they flap, not sure if birbs do the same thing or if it's even possible in game to do something like that, would be complicated I think but never know. Mix that with the comment talking about slightly up tilt on one flap and slight down tilt on the opposing stroke.
