We use sand in our coop and run and our little ladies love it! Super easy to clean as well!

@@BackYardChickensVideos Can I use sand off a beach. Am thinking of starting a small scall farm in the Bahamas. Appreciate advice and help.

I use sand in the coop and run. I will never use anything else! I have about a 3-4 inch layer inside the coop and it retains heat in the winter here in Alaska. It doesn’t freeze at all unless it’s wet or damp, which hasn’t been an issue for me at all since I use a nipple waterer. I clean the coop daily with a long handle kitty litter scoop and use poop boards that I sprinkle with sand and the poo just rolls right off the boards. Quick and easy. Clean coop, no stink, healthy and happy chickens, clean eggs.

I have used sand in my coop for a few years now. I like that I can do a quick health check on my birds’ droppings when I scoop the coop every morning.

I’ve used sand inside a raised coop for several years and like it. I have hesitated putting it in the run. People say it’s cooler but how can it be if the sun shines in? The run is covered but in summer it’s still hot in there. I think of walking barefoot on the beach … ouch!

I like using sand in my coop, the only problem I have is hauling it to the coop. I'm not "a spring chicken" anymore. Haha

I use a plastic disk sled as it makes it easier. A wheeled cart or wheel barrow would be ideal.
@Deb16502 жыл бұрын
@@heatheran4783 I love the sled idea! Thanks for suggesting it! The wheel barrow is hard for me too because I have to take it down a slope.

Certain types of more "sharp" sand helps the chickens defense vs lice and thrice.
