Using the Brinly Hardy Tow Behind Aerator Spreader

Drop spreader distributes contents evenly and consistently. The distribution control does not shut off fully so there is some leakage of product when filling the hopper and when it is waiting to be driven off.
The aerator tines are very sharp but it is hard to see if they are making much impression on the earth. The unit was not 'hopping' so I guess they are getting some penetration even when the hopper is empty. The idea of combining aeration and distribution of materials is, on the face of it, a good one but I think I need a year of use to see if it really will replace my separate aerator with its two heavy concrete blocks ensuring good ground penetration of the tines. I've owned one for 3 years and usually use it twice a year. In spring and later in fall. Ive spread seed and fertilizers and love the slit aerator.I have just over 15000 sq ft of lawn and once i got this it made my life immeasurably easier.Not only in time but I hate walking behind a spreader and getting whatever I'm spreading all over me.

They didn’t have this one in stock so I bought just the aerator. That’s a nice concept other than I’d try to allow less product to discharge. Seeds and fertilizer are so expensive and that 50lb bag disappeared faster than a virgin on prom night.

I'm contemplating purchasing one and putting it on a face plate for mini digger, do the aerator spikes penetrate and creat a decent hole for overseeding

Spike penetration is up to two inches and other commenters have said how they successfully used it to spread seed. Hope this helps, T.

Last I check about two years ago I noticed that the ones at HomeDepot did not come with the pneumatic tires because all the ones they had only had the older plastic tires even though the boxes showed the pneumatic tires and mention they are supposed to have them. At the time I bought one and noticed the tires where not correct when I got home and so I took it back and we checked every box and sure enough none of them had the correct tires. So I just ended up not getting it because at the time they had both the older one with out the upgraded spikes and tires and the newer one that supposedly did and the newer one was about $100 more expensive. But all you'd be actually paying for were the upgraded spikes. I may go back and check to see if they now offer them with tires. Hopefully they do as the Brinly Hardy websites no longer shows the older one as a current product. Also online my local HomeDepot does not show the older version in stock even though they still have the page for it. Anyways I liked the look of Brinly Hardy over the Agri Fab. Plus where I work at FedEx Freight we see a lot of Agri come through the warehouse going back to local Agri Fab factory for repairs and returns which kind of puts me off from buying their products. :P

That's an illuminating tale, VectorRoll. I've had this one for about two years and can confirm that I have the pneumatic tires. Incidentally, they hold air very well and only get topped up from time to time. Luckily I have not had any major problems with either make but the facts are worth considering in the future. Good question; While the tines are extremely sharp they don't penetrate that far, a couple of inches - maybe a bit further with weight blocks added - so if irrigation lines are buried a few inches below the surface that shouldn't be an issue.

How effective does this spread mulch, compost and damp soil?

Don't know, I've never needed to do that, Duane. Mulch is dumped and spread with a rake and soil takes care of itself. The distribution vent is quite narrow so you might want to take this into account before attempting to use it for damp or wet products like compost. If you do go with this tool let us all know the secret to your success, will you?

Compost isn’t always wet, but usually it is a little damp with small chunks. How big is the opening and what kind of apparatus moves the material to the gate?

Yes, ideally you do. The aerator works without weights on pliable ground. Adding weights will achieve a deeper penetration. The weight tray is an additional purchase.

Showing the fertilizer leaking onto the white concrete, as opposed to (almost) invisibly on the grass, provides a clear message on that. You clearly saw that didn't you.
