Using the Leica M9-P to shoot Grad Photos in 2020

Does it make sense to purchase a 10 year old camera and use it for a professional photoshoot in 2020? I take my recent quarantine purchase, my silver Leica M9-P, and use it to do a college grad shoot with Darlene, who is no stranger to the channel. My experience and opinions about using the M9-P in 2020 is in the video.

Thanks for putting this together. I have an m9, and I did chuckle when your model ran to look at the viewer. The display is woeful, but the camera is a rare gem. I have other cameras, but it’s a real deal Leica. The 75 is a lovely lens too. Cheers.

Yeah that black streak was weird, never happened to me either, yes CCD is something different.

Great video. I use my Canon setup for my professional stuff, but my family photos are almost exclusively made with my M9 or the Q. You nailed it when you said: you worked for that photo !

Hahahah yeah, my main right now is the Leica SL, and if you want reassurance that you will nail that photo, then a Canon or Nikon setup will get you that photo. Using Leica rangefinders you gotta think fast! haha :)

You’re actually not seeing the colors out of the camera. You’re seeing Adobe Color profile. Top right you have to change profile to “Embedded” to see the embedded profile settings in the RAW pictures directly from the M9 camera. Only true way to appreciate the CCD colors. The black bar could be your SD card. Being that it’s such an old camera, the card may not play well with the camera. Also SD cards greater than 32gb do not work at all or can fail. I love my M9. Thank you for spreading the word on this archaic gem. Also, lovely model.

Yes you are correct, I am seeing the Adobe Color profile in LR, which looks really great, even C1 looks good as well, I find that embedded is a bit less contrasty with magenta, so I stick with adobe color. I am actually using a PNY 64GB which works perfectly with the M9-P havnt had any problems at all, Yes I still have my M9-P :) Will do a youtube review soon of the CV 35mm 1.2 III

Cool photos Guam. I am a big fan of the Leica M9 myself. I just uploaded a video essay l I did on it to my channel, but almost all the photos I used were dng. I like that you mention the high contrast black and white jpgs, I think I will give it a try as some new material for a new video. I wonder which black and white films stocks it comes close to. Any idea?

I got a tip from someone a while ago: shoot with the slower SanDisk cards. I think they're the blue ones that are harder to find these days. The reason has something to do with the way CCDs are designed. FWIW!

Great Review! Thank you for another winner. Quick question - I am considering the M9/M9-P for exactly the same reasons spoken in your review. The CCD Kodachrome colors and amazing B&W jpegs. You’ve got the M9-P. Are the two cameras essentially the same or would you recommend one over the other? Thank you, Chaps

If you want a nicer looking camera (in my opinion) with the sapphire glass, and Leica inscription on the top plate, then get the M9-P. If you want the classic Leica look with the red dot in the front, and the words at the back that says 'Leica Camera Made in Germany' (the M9-P does not have this), then get the regular Leica M9, make sure it has the CCD ID sensor of 16 or 15 :) These are the newer replaced sensors that do not corrode.

I just got the M9 this weekend. Playing with it today. Something to get use to. First set of images on manual with a Zeiss 50 F2 are blurry.

maybe your shutter speed is too low? it just takes practice to make the focus patch go into focus, If that makes sense. Also it could mean the M9 needs to be calibrated if its always blurry the photos.

Really nice look from the Voigtländer lens. Every time I use a 75mm on a Leica I goof up at least once and frame with the 50mm lines. 🤣 The M9s do have occasional data writing hiccups. This can leave you with a corrupt Raw file but an okay JPEG, so I set the camera to save both. Note that I’ve experienced this with both Lexar and Sandisk 32GB cards, though most of ‘em (out of maybe 20 total over ~6 years of use) were with a Lexar.

Hahahaha yeah, I did that also! Yes I also had bad experiences with Lexar, I was using a PNY 64GB USH-I card, maybe ill try to get a cheaper SanDisk UHS-I card. That is a good idea to shoot both raw and jpeg, I may just try it!

I've never been able to get cards over 16GB to work with my M9. Tried a few 32gb and 64Gb but no chance. Never had any issues writing to the 16GB cards, but definitely some buffer issues...

@@oliscurra I just use LEXAR 633x UHS-I SDHC cards in all of my Leica Ms. 16GB in the M8 and 32GB in the M9 -P. Never had any issues with those cards. Both cameras are of course running the latest firmware. 64GB will definitely be formatted as 32GB and make therefore no sense in the older M bodies and I found 32GB cards too large for the M8.
