After picking up a Revox a77 I have been learning how it affects music and what its limits are. I throw a couple of different tracks at varying levels to see what it comes up with. I really love this machine and what it does. Drums just sound un-believable!

Another pro tip I learned in studios was to make a sync beep on the beginneling of your song. Playback the tracks you want to taped en and recordback the tapehead immediately in the DAW. This way you will make sure your sound has all the tape features but you can sync them to your multitrack after you sync the beginning beep. You beat relativity

Thank you! When I make music I dig thru all my packs and pick whatever one shots speak to me in a new curated folder and then give it a name. This time I was using "gallery" & "compact flash summer" on the first 3 songs. The last part of the video is from a live drum session of me improvising an I haven't completed that edit yet. If you tell me specifically what sounds you like I can upload the compact flash summer on the site?

At this time I was using a Electro Voice RE-18 to record. Then with processing I like to use the Sound Toys Radiator to bring in more harmonics.

Hey Man, thanks for making this video! Do you have any issues of the tape speed not being exactly in sync with the original file? I tried to put drums thru a cassette deck but an its not in sync anymore after a couple of minutes. That means it messes with the timing and everything sounds off. Would love to work with tape but it seems not really reliable.. :(
@vvundertone
@vvundertone Ай бұрын
Ah yes this is common with certain tape devices. The more cheaper or out of maintenance the more likely to experience drift and timing problems. If you have a more professional machine this is less likely. But in the meantime I would suggest committing to the tape drums from the start. So make your drums, bounce it to tape and back to the DAW. Produce the track on top of the tape drums. It’s ok to make music off the grid sometimes in fact I highly recommend it. Give it a try at least once!

@@vvundertone Yes thank you for your response! In my case it's a live recorded Trio Setting. So it won't work. But in case anyone has the same problem I found a plugin called AutoAlign Post wich helps a lot!!
@ronmoes42

The problem with these kinds of tape decks is that the low end becomes crunchy and you don't have a clear and punchy low end ,you might want to low and high pass two tracks and see if that helps, anyway the good tape recorders used in studios are to maintain resolution because they go faster but also add something special. the transient are smeared in a nice way!
@vvundertone
@vvundertone 2 ай бұрын
Totally. With the work I do I’m not concerned with getting a mix sounding let’s say Dr Dre 2001 I’m more into Madlib style sound. So I like (some) crunchy..But I am always searching for different sounds so I may try this hipass ty!

I would actually leave certain instruments out like drums and bass and do higher instruments like synths and guitar, or maybe just a certain instrument that you want to stand out. I also just thought of something while i was typing, it would be cool if you just did the reverb through it

This is a highly slept on technique which is very accessible and very cool sounding. You can use a fresh stock vhs for something crispy or find some dusty 1980s horror movie and get some cool lofi warble. Although blending the vhs signal with digital maaaaay be a tad difficult. Let me know how it goes! And I might try too :)

So far so good on my part. None of my machines has had any issues. But it’s important to know someone who care repair. I live in LA and I’m sure there’s a handful of people who do this stuff I just haven’t found them yet.

"Annoying digital frequencies" - not sure what your referring to here. Unless your sample rate is ridiculously low your digital recording will be quite literally capturing whatever you recorded in from your instruments.
@vvundertone
@vvundertone Ай бұрын
what I am referring to is your point. Its too exact. I like shooting film because it enhances the scene, adds a little magic. I feel recording to tape is the same. It gives me back something different than whats in the room. Color, texture, etc.
