We went to the hardware store to find the sharpest, grit, sandpaper, to see if we could make our own DIY skateboard, grip tape! As you’ll soon find out, this was a little bit harder than we thought! If we stay sharp, this still shouldn’t be a problem!

In terms of attaching to the board, best thing you should use, is spray contact cement. You spray a thin layer on each surface, wait for it to dry a little, then when it contacts it won't let go.

You should have used contact cement glue, it is what is used to adhere the laminate to wood in making countertops. Also there are different grits of sandpaper, so I am sure you can find a closer grit to what matches grip tape. I have never skateboarded, but have spent a lifetime in construction.

man, you got like the gnarlyist grit sandpaper for this! I wonder what it would be like if you tried super fine sandpaper, like polishing 3000 grit? or maybe multiple grits, like 80, 180, 220, 320, etc? Also 3M spray adhesive might work great for this, and a lot faster! spray the paper then the board, let it dry, stick them together and go!

You could get many different grips of sandpaper and use a spray adhesive. It wouldn’t take as long to put onto the skateboards.

Some sandpaper does have glue on the back. It is made different for different needs. Also griptape is made for abusive use over a longer time. Where as sand paper is typically made to be abrasive, but not longevity

I bet roof tiles might work as well. Board would probably be alot heavier though. Also finding a way to get them to stick without using roof nails might be a problem.

Hello Braille. I am currently an auto body technician and they do make circular paper that has a sticky backing once you remove the extra sheet on back. This goes the whole way down to 12 grit my friend. Also, you can find 4-8 grit but it's not sticky. Search for circular 12 grit sand paper for a DA sander, probably 12 inch works best for this project. Also DA stands for dual action in case your wondering lol

Sandpaper falls about when you sand with it. It doesn't last very long, which is why you buy it in rolls or many sheets. So I wouldn't expect it to last long on a skateboard. The more it gets used, the less grippy it will become because the little rocks/sand will fall off. It appears, that's exactly what happened.

Try a slightly finer grit and use a cheap brush to apply the glue so the glue is covering the whole deck evenly it might not peel as easily 🤔

Two things. First you can get Sam's paper with a peel and stick back. Second, grip tape is about 120-320 grit. Y'all got 36 grit. 😊

Aaron didn't spread the glue out so it's ripping off where it's not actually glued down. Also medium grain sandpaper would be more similar. I think if someone can buy grip tape that's the obvious way to go, but lots of people are trying to skate with little to no money and sandpaper is a real way to cut cost.

Here's some science (?) that nobody asked for: The number, or grit, that sand paper is graded with has to do w/ the size of the "sand" particles and how many of them fit through a 1 inch square space. The lower the number , the bigger the grain of sand and the rougher the grit. Higher number = smaller sand = smoother grit. The paper you guys used in this video was 36 grit, so 36 of those sharp little grains of "sand" , if all laid out tightly in a single layer, would pass through a 1 inch square hole. 100 grit means the sand would need to be smaller so 100 grains could fit through the same sized hole and so on. For comparison, the most common grip tape (Jessup, MOB, etc) is ROUGHLY 😂the same as 80 grit sandpaper.

You should go the next step of cheapness. Instead of using griptape, roll glue onto the top of the deck and pour sand over it. The grip is whatever sand sticks when the glue is dry.
