Using the Sigma Merrill DP cameras. Real world review with photos taken over 10 years

The Sigma Merrill DP cameras are intoxicating and infuriating at the same time. But I think the benefits outweigh the negatives. They are not for people who don't want to take the time to lear how to use them. And it certainly helps to have some basic photography skills to get the most out of them. However, even with their quirks, there is something magical about the way the foveon sensor reproduce colors and the lenses render the out of focus (Bokeh) areas. They are sharp, creamy, and beautiful. If you are willing to use learn how to use these quixotic cameras, I believe that they can help take your photography to the next level.

Beautiful photos, thanks for sharing. Love my DP1. Just like shooting 100 asa film. In full manual it’s an excellent street photo camera.

Great video and good points made. I had all 3 DP Merrill for a few years and the pace they force on you definitely was an aid to my photography. You have to be very careful with your framing, focus, settings, and exposure. So the entire process is very contemplative and relaxing. But the reward is colors and micro-contrast that make the images from speedy modern cameras look plastic in comparison. I do miss mine!

WOW! WOW!! I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THESE CAMERAS... UNTIL I DID A SEARCH FOR MONOCHROME CAMERAS. IN THE SEARCH, THIS CAMERA CAME UP! I AM SOOOO GLAD THAT I CLICKED ON YOUR VIDEO! This video was just what I was looking for, thanks. I've been using the Sigma FP for about a year making videos (Digital Motion Media channel) and I really love the results using 12bit CDNG. It is also capable of producing some very nice photos but I want something unique and a bit special for making prints. I think my heart is set on the DP1 Merrill and my head says it would be perfect for the tropical beach and seascapes where I live, as well as waterfalls, colourful temples, etc. One question, if you don't mind. Would you say the Merrill is good for photographing people? One or two reviewers weren't very positive about this.

Nothing wrong with the Sigma SD1Merrill and the 18-50 F2.8 lens. The 18-35 F1.8 might be even better. I have all 4. 😊
