Not sure if you've checked out Rockbox, but there's some neat stuff you can do with it; maybe not quite Linux-level, but it runs Doom/GB emulators on 5th-gen+

That said, the boot screen on this Wikipedia iPod already looks an awful lot like it's booting Linux. This is why I mentioned it. It may well be that this Wikipedia-Pod is in fact running Linux under the hood.

I assumed Wikipedia would be WAY too big to do something like this today, but it turns out all of Wikipedia compressed to just text in 2022 is only around 20 gigabytes. So you could theoretically download all of Wikipedia to your smartphone and have it anywhere without cell data
