Thank you Jeanette for this video. Just what I needed. So many tutorials take you step by step through the piecing of the quilt and making the quilt sandwich then leave you to “quilt as you like”. Well, when you are starting out you don’t know what you like or how to do it. This was an excellent start and can we now have simple instructions as to how to do the actual quilting eg what to do with the threads when you start and finish etc as well as some basic free motion quilting . Thank you again.

I love the way you mentioned the fact that close quilting makes a quilt stiffer. So many tutorials on quilting don't mention that and a lot of new quilters aren't aware of it. Years ago, I made a mistake by not asking for samples the first time I used a longarm quilter. I didn't know what to ask. The double-sided quilt took me almost 2 months to piece because I had 250 kaleidoscope blocks on one side. She did a tight all over design that came out as stiff as the furniture pads in a moving truck. I had a birthday deadline and no time to fix it. Thanks for reminding people.

I was one of the viewers who wanted to improve my quilting skills on my home sewing machine. 😊 found a few tips today. I needed to " relax a bit" this early evening, so I was happy there was a video from my fave quilting channel. Was tidying my sewing space today and going thru my bins of quilt tops. 😮 I have a lot to quilt, lol. I liked the wavy line /hills pattern you quilted. Might have to use that one. This is inspiring! I’ve started straight-stitch quilting on my Sashiko 2, but I’m now going to try the wave stitch. I’ve seen it done randomly, but I really like the equidistant rows of stitching. It’s amazing how beautifully the wave stitch enhances a simple rail fence 4-patch with sashing and cornerstones. This is definitely on my list for a quilt retreat gift (we’re leaving a quilt on another’s bed). I can also raid my stash and whip up some quick donation quilts/ throws for my local hospice fundraiser. I’ve been subscribed to your channel for a while. Another great tutorial Jeanette. Some great tips, I find the quilting seam guide on my walking foot really useful. I’d love more FMQ tutorials as my new Janome has a FMQ stitch regulator and quilting rulers. Uneven stitch length has always put me off FMQ so 🤞🏻2024 is the year I finally start to learn how to FMQ. Looking forward to your next tutorial.

Jeanette I so enjoy your videos, I’m currently machine quilting one of my quilts. I limit myself to no more than three flimsy at a time. I will love to learn from you, Jeanette . I have tried a few times to quilt on my machine but tear it back out. I know to increase the stitch,use walking foot but I seem to have trouble with keeping the stitching length the same down the top.

Hi Linda, we asked Jeanette and she said - Sounds like the machine is skipping stitches which is most probably the needle. Put in a new needle and use a quilting needle 80 or universal one sized at least 80/12 - with a lighter weight needle the machine may be having trouble going over places where there is more bulk, so a stronger needle should help.

Hi from South Africa. Thanks for this video. I've watched hundreds of videos you are the very first person to actually say that alot of quilting makes for a harder or stiffer quilt. Great advise. I'm now seeing people are quilting on the back of "minky" or fleece with no batting for a softer quilt... But they never said why😅

Could you talk a bit more about threads in a future video? I am a new quilter (long time garment maker) and am very consistent in using 50wt cotton thread in my piecing, but tend to reach for my stash of sew-all gutermann threads for any quilting. What do you use?

Thank you so much for sharing. I am a rather a self taught new quilter. I have found your channel so helpful. I have only finished two quilts with straight line stitch. I like your curvy lines and didn’t realize I could use my walking foot and guide to achieve that look. The quilt I am working on at the moment turned out smaller than I wanted so I am going to try to add a 3” border. I do have a question though, the top design is Rail fence and I’m going to straight line quilt, but do you also quilt the border that I am adding, or does it matter. Thank you again Jeanette. Hi Dee, Jeanette said: You can quilt the border if you wish, or leave it if it looks ok without quilting, especially if it’s only a narrow. However, I would recommend looking at the instructions of the wadding/batting you are using as it will state how far apart you should quilt and use that as a guide. I often quilt the centre first then stand back and decide what else needs to be done. A simple framing border is quick and may just help give you quilt a bit of an extra ‘lift’. I’ve done a tutorial on how to do it. It’s amazing what a bit of texture can do. Glad you’re finding the tutorials helpful. Please send us a photo when you’re done!

Jeanette, thank you for all this information. A question, when using a stencil, such as the one on the whole page, looks to be about 8x10, how do I place it so the quilting looks continuous? If I place it in the center, how do I move the stencil so the lines of quilting do not look as though I did the stencil and beside it another same stencil. I hope you understand my question. Hello, We asked Jeanette your question and here was her reply - Choose a stencil that has a continuous design, it should have a start and end points which you align to repeat the pattern. Even if the pattern isn’t continuous just place it in a way that offsets the design slightly, by the time you’ve finished quilting it should be more difficult to see the individual pattern. I sometimes draw a free hand swirl or line to connect patterns if it looks as though the design needs it. If you’re unsure draw out your idea first on to paper to see how it looks - be creative and have fun.

I have a Brother V3 embroidery machine. I am told that by using a suitable machine embroidery pattern, it is possible to quilt your item???

Hello, Yes, Jeanette has a Brother V3 and use it to quilt smaller projects, she uses ‘edge to edge’ quilting patterns mostly but you can get ones that quilts blocks in different sizes. Search for ‘quilting designs for embroidery machines’ rather than embroidery designs.

The ghost line from a Frixion pen is not bleached - it’s wax from the ink. A hair dryer, steam iron, a heated craft blower, or even clothes dryer will eliminate it.
