#Roland Cloud is now offering Zenology Pro. It is running Roland #Zen-Core synthesis. The same Zen-Core that runs in the MC-101, MC-707 and more. So how does one goes about making their sounds in Zenology Pro them using them in the MC-101? This is what I tackle today!

Yes, an (remote-) editor is what I want. I don't need more presets. I don't even want all this parameters. Just a few more on the device itself would be perfect: Filter envelope; maybe filter model; oscillator waveform; oscillator mix; FM. For me that would already be enough. I am not so much into creating patches from scratch, but I would like to be able to alter the presets more, to make them fit in my song and I want to be able to change the sound over time. (I love having a sequence/arp running and do some morphing :) )

Thanks for the info, i was wondering about the expansion models for Zenology and if they were compatible with my 707, now i know! You should mention that you can purchase VST from a 3rd party for (limited) control the 101 and/or 707. Because Roland doesn't see any money in making a VST for their AIRA gear.

Thank you very much for those explanations. Roland got really bad at naming and presenting their tools. I was about to buy the SH-101 Model Expansion especially for my MC-707. That would have been 149$ thrown out the window! Thanks to your video things are much clearer now. ☺

Just got a 707 I wasn’t aware it didn’t load or have access to the expansion modals . Wish I’d seen this video before . I had to dig deep searching for that info . Hope Roland will update the 101/707 to do so , but at this length of time later seams fairly dubious .

Really love that digital distorted 303 sound you had at 17:10. I'm afraid I agree with Skull HQX. These are very promising developments, but it feels a bit too cumbersome for the price Roland is asking. Maybe I'm just getting old and lazy though! I look forward to seeing what this workflow is like in 5 years on the MC-1001.

You can buy a lifetime to just the pack you want to buy for $.99. Some of them have 15 tones, some have 30 tones, some have 30 tones and a drum set. All without subscribing to Roland Cloud. But honestly, you probably don't need it. The random tone generator they added is super fun and powerful. Then you can further shape the sound using the envelope, cutoff, resonance offsets, the motion sequencer, and the master effect for that track. I really think you can generate similar or better sounds than you wind up buying. Personally, out of 30 tones, I'm lucky if I find 15 that I will actually wind up using in a track. But that's just my opinion.

My dream would be for Roland to update the firmware to include an "oscillator" menu in the settings for a preset. It could have tuning, waveform type, filter type, and possibly a simple adsr. That's it. Maybe 1 menu deep if you put the adsr on the same page in numerical values. It wouldn't be too complex to implement, the engine is already in place, the randomizer already accesses these parameters. The 707 would still have double the tracks, and a screen to edit more fluidly, and zenology would probably have it's DAW workflow benefits, so it won't cannibalize those products. But that one pesky menu would imo make the mc101 the best portable groovebox on the market, and an enormous value for the price. I mean modern classic territory like the elektron stuff

If I have a membership for Zeonology Pro for say a month, create a load of sound on it, then load them into the MC-101, can I still use those sounds after my membership expires? Or do I only have access to my own as long as I have my own membership?

The presets have been copy to your SD cards. I guess they would continue to work.

Wait! That means that this Zenology software allows to create our own patches of sounds and save it as a file that we could share with anyone. Is there an online resource where users share freely their patches for anyone to quickly import to our devices? I'd really appreciate having more analog synths patches in my MC101.

Yes , the Roland Cloud Manager is a license management system. It can manage subscription or lifetime keys. You can create an account for free and then only buy the patch collections that you are interested in.

I have the MC 101, and i love it. But the reason to upgrade to the 707 is, that the 707 doesn‘t need the editor. The full featured synth is onboard. So maybe a good alternative to buy the Zenology Pro, is to buy the MC-707. Thanks for the video!

@@rorysparshott4223 Yes you can. You can load a 707 project in a 101. Only the tracks 5-8 will be ignored. Even if you program a sound on the 707, it will be transferred.

No, they don’t stop working . Keep in mind that Zenology Pro is another synth ( just virtual). You simply can exchange patches between them.

The MC-101 plays presets. It does not provide full access to the synth engine on the hardware itself. I have not see any software editor for it. It accept patches from other Zen-Core device (Zenology pro it also one virtual Zen-Core device). Zenology Pro is a full feature soft synth.

You can export Zencore patches from 707 to another Zencore compatible software or hardware.

I understand the mc-707 and mc-101 both share around 3500-4000 sounds. So all of these is for ADDITIONAL sounds from the roland cloud?

They both come with more than 3000 factory presets. Then you can create your own or add preset from any source… the Roland cloud being one of these source of presets ( they release presets banks almost every month )

I love the Roland cloud so far, although I am stuck in scrolling land and overwhelm of having every synth Ive ever wanted. A good problem to have but seriously, Im locking in to 606 and a Jupiter. My problem is user error related for sure haha. Cheers.

Hi Nu-trix, this is outside of the scope of this video, I have the Zenology ultimate. I have some AIRA gear, system 1m, jd-xi and the mx1 mixer. Can i use some of this gear as a midi controller for zenology ? I know it's a stupid question rtfm :) but im not asking you to solve the whole thing, just point me in the right direction.

The MX-1 can send MIDI messages. You would have to check in the manual with MIDI messages are assigned to the cadres and knobs. I don’t think you can reassign to another MIDI message (but I’m not sure ). Then you to check the MIDI implementation chart of Zenology. (Check in the help menu or setting of Zenology, you should see a link to the manual. If you are in luck they are talking the same MIDI messages. If not you might be able to find a MIDI remapping plugin that can redirect the MX-1 message to the selected MIDI target in Zenology. Hope this helps.

Thanks, I downloaded Roland Cloud Manager and bought the XV-5080 but I’m having trouble it’s in my Roland Cloud Manager library and I install it, it shows that it installed when finished But when done it still says install not installed and I don’t see it anywhere on my Mac.

The MC-101 is a device by itself. The Roland Cloud is free. The Roland Cloud is a software licence manager. If you want extra sounds like any other devices you can buy patch banks. They are available inside Roland Cloud. If you want to have a software version of the same synthesis that exists in the MC-101, you can buy Zenology to play Zen-core sounds in your computer DAW. If you want to have the full synth then you can get Zenology Pro. Think of them as two different devices. The hardware Zen-Core and the software Zen-core . You can then exchange patches between the 2.

One thing is clear. The "lifetime key" will not last you a lifetime. The moment they change their model and the site vanishes, all your purchases will time out. How will you reinstall your license, if your computer crashes and the site is gone?

@@FeelRealRacing Afaik the 707 lets you edit patches to some degree. As you know this isn’t possible on the 101 itself. Not sure if you can transfer 707 patches to the 101, probably not. Zenology Pro for only that purpose and editing patches is a relative expensive exercise imho.

Side note: I was hoping for a flat patch-to-patch comparison between Zenology and a ZenCore device since I've encountered some that sound very different when using the hardware. Even manually programming the parameters from Zenology to my MC-707, a patch sounds different. THIS ISN'T ALWAYS THE CASE and is just my direct experience on firmware 1.72. Just wanted to make owners of the hardware aware of the difference.

Roland should tell people: there is no ability to import .wav files or any type of your own samples from your 707 or 101 into Zenology. Zenology ONLY can edit it's own internal sound patches.

So Roland is selling crippled hardware that is only unlockable with an on line(no more offline private use)account and a subscription that costs you money perpetually if you want to enjoy your instrument? Like Windows 10/Office 365 type thing? This is why I still hold on to my OLD gear.. Not everyone has an endless money pot to play their instrument. I hate this new world of no privacy and you have to be online all the time to enjoy things model.. Scary and sad. Well so much for buying the MC101. Time to stick to a Fantom X or Akai MPC

The hardware is not crippled. It does exactly what the sell it for. Roland, like many companies sells extensions and sound backs for those who want them. In the past it came on ROM chips, mini disk, floppy disk, omega drive, memory cards even tape cassette! Now it is using online managers. Still, without it the hardware does everything it was sold for. You don’t need to rent or buy.

Roland is smoking crack if they think I'm agreeing to a monthly fee for the privilege of updating my patches. I'll stick to the sounds already on the 101. I would maybe agree to buy some patches outright. But never a subscription.

You don’t have to get a monthly subscription. You can buy the Zenology software with a lifetime license. Also you can buy patches bundles for a small fee. Most of the bundles are less than 10$

You have to create a free Roland cloud account first. Then when is it installed go in the hardware section (on the left). In that window you should filter the hardware machine you want to see. MC-707 for exemple. Then the list you see is only for this device. You should have a list of compatible sound packs. To buy them, there is a button on the right of each pack for a lifetime key. Hope this helps.

But how much is that $1000 hardware synth going to be worth in 10 years, if its still working or hasnt been stolen or damaged or sold for less than you paid for it? And how much hassle is it going to be having it take up real estate, cost you in maintenance or messing about gettin it hooked up, recorded etc when with vsts you can have mutliple instances recorded in crystal clear quality with effects.

Roland has gone worse .. like KORG and their bs. System-8 was tze last hardware I will ever buy from them. 64 patches per engine, but any engine can only be used once! So you need to constantly load new patches frkm the sdcard and have to organise everything on the SD-card! WTF!? Of course the JD-XA has a completely different patch storage organization. What is going on @Roland!? Why do I need to subscribe for kne month to a web-service to download a System-8 plugin to be able to manage my patches!? I am done with all this complicated inconsistent always online shit.
