I was in Con Thien (The Hill of Angels). Some called it , "The Meat Grinder." Grunt radioman. Carried 280 rounds in bandoliers strapped across my chest. Stuck loaded magazines in my flak jacket and pant's pockets. The gear I used was from Marines rotating "back to the world." The Army had better gear and food. Where's your rifle cleaning kit? "Never leave home without it."
@dominicf47577 жыл бұрын
Randy Holy-Day Thank you for your service sir, yah I heard a lot of stories from other veterans on how bad the area was. At the moment I do not have a rifle cleaning kit because I don't have a real M-16 style AR-15, the one in the video is for display. But very shortly I will have one and when I get it then I'll be sure to pick up a kit. Again, thank your for your service, you truly are an American Hero.

@dominicf47575 жыл бұрын
I assume you were in the military so thank you for your service. The m16 had the 3 prong flash hider or open one as you called it up until 1967. In 1967 the M16A1 was fielded as a majority which had the bird cage or closed type. It is possible that the open type or 3 prong were still issued to you and others in 1969, but the closed type was definitely seen at a massive scale by 1969.

Cool Video. It's a M1952A flak vest, not M1954, and the army made extensive use of flak jackets, but it seemed to vary from unit to unit. The MKII was still in inventory in vietnam, the airforce had them into the 70s. I'd say add on some more mag pouches, or a few bandoleers, most guys carried around 20 mags. The 1974 dated SW&D goggles are probably not from 1974, don't know why but it seems all the SW&D goggles from 1974 onward were marked that. Those clip on chinstraps came into use in the late 70s, after Vietnam. Thanks for sharing.

Cap Camouflage Pattern Thanks for the info, currently I have updated this impression and I now have a M1955 USMC flak vest in the 2nd pattern configuration, as well as the correct pressure clip chin straps. Good work! Your flak is the standard army m1952 pattern, not worn much among army grunts but very popular with helicopter gunners and pilots before the chicken plate came out. The Marines in Vietnam wore the m1955 vest almost exclusively. There are three patterns of the m1955 vest. The first pattern without pockets was worn from 1965-1968. Starting around the tet offensive you see the second pattern with pockets emerge, but it isn't until late 1968 that it becomes majority. The third pattern with double shoulder cords and pockets with exposed buttons shows up in late to the party and is worn sporadically until the end of the war. Also if you look closely at footage from late 1967 on when the Marines procured the M16 you'll notice that the vast majority drop the M14 pouches and carry all of their mags in bandoliers, using the pistol belt just for canteens and first aid. This practice is done throughout the rest of the war. There's an excellent video on KZbin titled "US Marines in the battle of Hue City in the Vietnam War, 1968" that shows both the m1955 vest, and bandolier practice perfectly.
@dominicf47577 жыл бұрын
Yah I agree with you 100%, just from my research and what not as well as veterans I've talked to that were in the Marine Corp at the time I portray my impression, thats why I do the m-14 pouch, and carry an m-16, which is what I've seen for Con Thien, Operation Buffalo. The flak vest I also 110% agree that the M-1955 was the most common flak vest in the Marines, but although I have seen enough pictures of guys with them during the time, thats why I chose that M-1952a, sort of to portray the quantity of men who did have them. Sorry for the late reply, I certainly will use your advice for later war impressions as well. Thanks
