The U.S.-made FGM-148 Javelin is one of the premier portable anti-tank missile systems in the world. It’s also an expensive piece of kit, with each missile typically costing more than the targets it eliminates.

@@FinnaBusanut Not necessarily a great way of stating this! It is said just for the 'dramatic effect' for the video ONLY! Why? When in modern day battlefields, the intelligence is always collected in advance and/or even in the last minutes, as there are plenty of updates from aerial and UAV crafts, beaming down to the various battlefield and tactical commanders. So, it might be that the narrator has never been set foot on any military training grounds nor had been at other types of combat theaters, and has not been familiar with those kinds of exposure (experience.)

I fired the M47 in 1988-90 and that system was so inferior to this system, it is a relief to me to see the units today have a fire and forget system that has some real range and lethality. The M47 was a 1km range line of sight wire guided missile that demanded the shooter to keep the target in the crosshairs after a rather violent launch and a slow velocity (100m/sec) and exposed him to enemy return fire for up to 11 seconds. It ended its service as a semi-accurate (1m accuracy) bunker buster.

The Javelin is a two-stage propellant missile. The first stage is the launch motor, essentially a totally amped up bottle rocket on steroids. The launch motor is finished burning by the time the missile has cleared the launch tube, thus protecting the soldiers from back blast. If you watched the videos closely, there was no flame coming from the rear of the missile after it cleared the launch tube. A delay follows, allowing the missile to get further away from personnel before the flight motor is automatically ignited. You can both see and hear this happening. The flight motor then takes the missile to the target. You can see this best demonstrated from 3:13 of the video through 3:19. It's an ingenious and deadly weapon. Very badass.

We used Javelins at night time in Iraq in OIF IV to kill IED emplacement teams. Thermal at night plus fire and forget made it a perfect counter IED weapon. We would set up on IED black routes with 2-3 SKTs(small kill teams) armed with Javelins and wait for those ass holes to come digging in the road at zero dark thirty. Only downside was the price of missiles, but so what as long as it's saving american lives on the ground. We used probably a dozen or so missiles in that role and there's no telling the effect the had on the enemy. They worked, that much is certain.

@@thomassenbart because I've shot them, seen them with live rounds in Iraq back in 03 and again my brother was a javelin gunner when he was in. I also messed up my comment about the ammo storage. What I meant was if they hit the top of the M1 in the blow out panels on top of the tank, it's a VERY bad day to be a tanker. Many of the tanks used by other countries don't have the blow out panels on top like we do. Alot have the hull ammo storage for auto loaders. My first platoon sergeant literally wrote the TM's on the M1A1 and made sure to teach us everything about that tank.
@thomassenbart

@@alexanderroloff8093 So, my question is, have you or your brother ever shot them at modern day tanks, T-72s, T-80s, T-90s or seen them used against an M1? As far as I know, it has not been. I doubt your platoon sergeant wrote a TM for the M1, he would have to have been an engineer working for Chrysler or General Dynamics, to have any chance of doing so. Regardless, this says nothing about the efficacy of a Javelin against such a vehicle. When you speak of blow out panels, do you understand the purpose of these? If the ammo is going to blow, the force is directed up, as opposed to horizontal against the crew. In any case, you have a lot of ifs going on in your thinking.

What you are talking about already exists it is just not compatible with the javelin missile. Laser designator spotting scopes exist and can be used to direct hellfire missiles from apache gunships from the ground units perspective.
