American Futbol is aristocratic allowed to be controlled by those with money which filters out underprivileged less financially fortunate but physically gifted children. Until money is put into black communities to play futbol (soccer) we will not see the overnight success we dream of. It’s simple science. When they let black players play in baseball those first teams got remarkably better than the others. When they let them play in football same result. In basketball, shall I say more. GGG was playing for a draw against Uruguay; that's why he was sharing the Bolivia-Panama score. Even if they got grouped, GGG could spin it as a "close - well played" tournament; placing being grouped on the red card. Losing makes it harder for him to make those arguments. I hated the lack of offense this tournament as well as over the last 2 years -- it has been tough to watch. GGG's record against top 30 ELO teams (excluding Mexico) speaks volumes: 2-8-10. I think the whole structure of us soccer leads to your national team's poor performances under pressure. 1. No pro/rel so no tuff "go getter" players 2. Pay to play so drastic cut into your talent pool 3. Weak manager, never has GB coached at say Europa league level 4. Mid table club players so no expérience of edge matches at à high level. You, as a federation, are simply not nearly at the level required to compete.
@kylewilson28195 ай бұрын
You’re never getting pro-rel in the US. So go ahead and stop talking about it cause no one is buying teams and TV contracts just for teams to be relegated. Plus, Pro-Rel usually requires the removal of the salary cap, which means small markets can’t compete anymore, and the small markets are currently the ones producing the best talent right now in MLS. I agree that pay-for-play sucks. It’s infected basically every sport in America as well, with Little League baseball being replaced by travel ball and AAU being the go-to in basketball. The problem is that there’s really no solution short of Congressional intervention. And that’s not happening either. I DO believe the academy systems have been working very well though so far, so maybe that will be the work around. The coach is 100% the biggest and most easily fixable problem. GGG should’ve never been the coach to begin with, and he should not be the coach now. THIS is where I am perfectly comfortable lambasting the federation. Open your pocketbook and get a quality coach. The players have talent. I don’t believe that they are worse talent wise than virtually any CONCACAF team. And your logic doesn’t even support them being bad either, since teams like Uruguay and Panama have zero players over in Europe. Most simply play in South America or MLS. Frankly, where these players are playing doesn’t mean much anyways. Iceland players didn’t play anywhere significant, but they played HARD and had a dedicated system that played to their strengths. The USMNT doesn’t have that and THAT needs to change.
@pk74225 ай бұрын
Ok, this is starting to get stupid. I understand Kasey's reluctance to call for Berhalters resignation because he's friends with the guy. That said, Greg has to go. Overall, yes, Berhalter has a pretty great record as head coach - 43 wins and 17 losses i think it is. And yes, he's got some trophies. But Gold Cup, Nations League, friendlies, these are all overwhelmingly against nations that we quite frankly are supposed to be winning against..... Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, Suriname, etc. So it's not like that record is the one that matters. It's the Top 20 record that matters, and he cannot get the best out of his players for any of those games. His record is 0-6-5 against Top 20 teams as a head coach. That's pathetic, it's embarrassing, and with the tremendous amount of talent he is blessed with, there is no reason that modern day American players cannot be competitive with other Top 20 teams. The writing is on the wall people. B.J. Callahan, Berhalter's right hand man, has already left the national team and accepted the head coaching job with Nashville F.C. Wholesale change is coming to the USMNT, and rightfully so.

Timothy Weah as the example. You can’t expect a player that is asked to defend/cross the ball and get up and down the sideline week in and week out for his club and then when he plays for the national side expect him to be clinical enough on the end of those chances when he doesn’t do that regularly at club level. Only Pulisic, McKennie, Scally, Richards, Robinson, Ream, Balogun start regularly. Gio, Adams, Turner, and Weah haven’t been getting any club minutes for a while now. That’s too many out of a starting 11 that are trying to find form or are not match ready. Musah got more minutes for Milan than those 4 combined and Musah wasn’t a regular starter. First thing after Gregg is gone we need a new keeper, I say bring Slonjna up, idc who just someone that can play with their feet.

@PacmanBrunner you know what, that Panamanian player probably got the result or even more then what he wanted by doing that. You don't think the rest of the world doesn't see how offended Americans get at everything. Is throwing racial slurs at someone wrong, of course it is. Is the international game and league game trying to put a stop to it, for awhile now they have. But when your tussling with someone in the penalty area and the ref is 15 yards from you, there not going to hear it. It's all mind games, which not anything specific, but in general, mind games are part of the game, you have to remain on the game, and not on the mind games. As far as I'm concerned, hitting someone, resorting to violence is no better then the racial slurs. Becides that, retaliating for something may feel good when it happens, but how did he feel sitting in the locker room by himself while the rest of the half kept playing. If he didn't feel bad about that, cause all that mattered was retaliation, then he doesn't belong on the team. I imagine he wasn't the only one on the field getting racial slurs thrown his way. Oh and one more thing, it his word against everyone else on if the racial slurs even happened, did anyone else on the team back that up cause they heard it, if so, then maybe it did happen, but no one in this comment section was out on that field during the game to know 100%.

The US team is not simply a coach away from success. The talent on that team isn't that good, no matter any amount of coaching. If players are that brittle enough to collapse just by hearing the score of another game, then you have the wrong players out there. I hate to say this, but the players need to be criticized - we criticize individual players in every other sport but for some reason in soccer they are shielded from all of it by the analysts who just bang on the coaching over and over and over and over...

Reffing was all-time worst. I don't know how Keller can say with a straight face that the reffing didn't affect that outcomes. In the Panama game, the ref changed the card from yellow to red despite the replay not showing anything more than Weah grazing a player's head upon pushing him back after he got in his space. The ref basically rewarded a thug play and gave a result away. And in the Uruguay game, the ref literally allowed an offside goal. Nobody is saying that goal wasn't offside. There's no f'ing excuse for that if you're using video replay.

To me, great in depth discussion. But the fact that we're sitting here treading water speaks volumes to the lack of ambition of USMNT and the USSF. It's almost like a "hey we made it, look at us, mentality". Versus what is reality - a team not in one of the big federations that has never, and continues not to, be relevant on the world stage. We cannot compete for a lesser international trophy AT HOME. We did NOT get out of a group that has PANAMA and BOLIVIA. This is right up there with being knocked out of the world cup in 2018. If it ain't broke, you don't fix it. But getting knocked out of a tournament at home, in this group. It should be inexcusable. It starts from the top down and the complacency is pretty disgusting. NOW would be the time to act, you have 60 ish days until the next friendlies before WC qualifying really starts to heighten. Its like there's no accountability. Weah acting a fool against Panama - who is holding him accountable? the Coaching. I loved when they panned to him during USA v. Uruguay and he's just chilling with his air pods. There seems to be no expectations or higher standard of accountability, only the fans and pundits seem to expect it which is bad that its external not internal oversight. Not getting good results time after time, its almost embarrassing given the talent pool and depth that is becoming available versus this competition. There needs to be higher expectations because what they continue to send out there just simply isn't enough.

The USMNT is in trouble and I think more people need to be real with that fact. The federation can't afford a world class manager because they must also increase the pay of their women's manager. Not saying that Hayes doesn't deserve it because she is absolutely the best manager for the women's team, but that is something the federation must contend with. The follow up is that most of the US youth academy and system is a pay to play system. Your best players in most of the world come from families and areas that really didn't have a lot of money. So the US youth academy has to deal with players who have money more than skill. This issue is also what has happened to Mexico. Mexico should be a top 5 country in world football with the level of world class youth talent they have, but they are struggling worse than the USA is. Last thing is that for a long time, the best US players are actually from Europe (literally) or practically from Europe with how their career developed. The team has been regressing for a very very long time and yet everyone comes out at every tournament acting like they are guaranteed to make it through to later knockout stages. They are simply not good enough.

It is not about "character" and wanting it more and all of that nonsense. This is purely tactical. Berhalter does not know how to manage the quality players he has. These players are playing in Europe because they wanted to prove themselves as Americans; they clearly have heart. USA needs a coach who is able to create a defined system of play and also be able to adapt when teams are out playing them.
@codymarmon31945 ай бұрын
Always a pleasure to hear Kasey Keller's opinion. Love and agree with the assessment of where the USMNT is standing now. It's either the lack of depth at the nine or wingers' spots that need to be addressed or Gregg Berhalter has to go. As far as I understand, he has strong connections and a strong relationship with the USSF to keep the National Manager spot. But it's an absolute embarrassment what he displayed telling his players it was 1-1 between Panama and Bolivia then proceeds to have his guys not thinking about what they needed to accomplish at the moment in time well on their own soil. No urgency and extremely poor lapses in judgment. The Panama game was a complete disaster after Weah got the red card and ultimately the breaking point for the USMNT in the 2024 Copa America. Pumped about Flo Balogun he's a star striker in the making.

That being said these players are very overrated and over hyped. Pulisic is the only one that I would say is above average. None of the other players on this roster are above average. Mckennie is about to be sold away from Juve as they dont want him. Reyna is being moved on from Dortmund and couldnt get mins at Forest. Adams is solid but has to stay healthy. Weah plays wingback because he cant score or assist but hes first choice winger for USMNT? Musah has potential but currently is a lesser Mckennie. The defense is actually better than its been in a long while but that hasnt mattered. They arent bad and with a good coach could grind out more results but this group is a far cry from "golden generation."

In the first half Uruguay's keeper had to dive for a low cross from Reyna that Balogun was going to get to at the back post. In the 2nd half, Reyna and Pulisic combined down the left, and Reyna got free and found Haji Wright in the center of the box, but Haji couldn't figure out how to get an opening for a shot. Those I think were the two most dangerous. It was otherwise quarter chances at best.

People who haven't played sports have no idea of the importance of a good coach. I played soccer in Junior High in the 60s. The first year soccer was played in our school. Our coach had played at a school that didn't have football. He told us you can win many way. Skill, hustle, being in better shape, being smart. He said, forget skill. We didn't have it. The first year we played his old school and got thrashed. The next year we tied. For three years he built up a nucleus of very good players. We get to high-school. Our coaches are dopes. Probably never played the game. We get Catholic school transfers, kids that played on German club teams, exchange students, and a kid from Scotland who scored 30 goals in 10 games. Yet the core of the team, the backs and midfielders, were trained by the great coach. We win the league. We go to the districts and lose the first game. Coaching malpractice. We had a spectacular player, several extremely good players, and lots of solid players. Of course, this was relative. The kids from Scotland and Hungary were the real deal. They grew up playing the game. We grew up playing lots of games before we even knew what soccer even was. I wouldn't even say it was our favorite game. We still played football instead of soccer in the neighborhood. It was until I saw a European game on PBS in the 70s that I even saw good soccer. We played the English style - kick and chase. Bayern Munich and IIRC Dynamo Kiev looked like they were playing billiards. It was 1986 before I really got a chance to see world class soccer and quality. I watched almost every game on a Spanish station out of NYC on a snowy B&W TV. But once you see quality, you don't forget it. And you don't believe the hype just because you're a fan. During Euro 2000 - France won after their World Cup in 1998 - I listened to a European call-in show on the internet. Fans from all countries, hoping for the best for their teams. Then the moderator switched to analysis, asking them about quality. There was no denying the quality with fan or national hype. They grew up with the game. Way too much experience to delude themselves. Unlike in the US. In sports occasionally an athlete comes along unlike anything you've seen before. Ali and Olga Korbut. Gretzky. Zidane and Messi and Ronaldo. And Caitlin Clark are examples. Sometimes the grittier team triumphs over the more talented team through will and coaching. Bill Russell over Chamberlain or the Flyers over the Bruins. And every once in a while you get to see one of the greatest teams or players ever. For me it happened to be an Australian cricket team. And Ali and Tom Brady. And in 15 years maybe Patrick Mahomes. I've seen decent to good American soccer players. Gritty players. I've heard hype ad nauseum. I've never seen a great American soccer player. And I'm not counting relatively great players like the USWNT, regardless of their World Cups. I was a keeper and also a tennis player.. F = M x A. Only twice have I felt anything close to world class power. Once during practice catching the kid from Scotland's shot and once hitting with a Big 10 doubles champion the year after he'd lost to Arthur Ashe 6-4 6-4 on the pro tour, around the time Ashe won his Grand Slam titles. As close as I ever got to experiencing world class athletic talent. It's real and you can't fake it.
