I'm finishing my freshman year in high school, and I hope one day I can attend USNA. Unfortunately I live in one of the most competitive congressional districts (the same one as Annapolis) so I'll need to work extra hard to earn an appointment.

From someone who was in your place a few years ago, that mindset is the most important thing. Don't lose it! Keep your eye on the prize always and do whatever you can to maximize your individual opportunities and situation to steer you in that direction. They're not looking for the smartest, most athletic, or perfection. They're looking for a well rounded, hard working person*; whatever that looks like within your own context! Just do your best, and if it's something you really want, then it's more than possible for you! Don't give up, Wyatt! Feel free to ask questions as well. I'll be joining them for the class of 2026's Plebe Summer in a few weeks :)

You got this Wyatt! As a Naval Academy graduate from the class of 2008, I completely agree with Gabby’s message and I’ll add one more thing. Live out the core values of the Navy (honor, courage, and commitment) throughout your years in high school and challenge yourself in the spirit of the Naval Academy’s mission of developing yourself mentally, morally, and physically. By demonstrating those things on top of what Gabby said, I’ll have no doubt that you will make a great Midshipman and future officer. Good luck and godspeed!

Why can't there be this much love for enlisted graduations? Granted, there are ALOT more graduations for enlisted folks, but ya'll get the drill.
@g.lowenklee2268
@g.lowenklee2268 2 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking - I'd argue that it's a higher standard of accomplishment: First, the acceptance rate for service academies is low, it's a very selective process to be accepted. Second, the enforced standard is higher ...it's a much more rigorous environment set to a much higher standard. Third, new junior officers will have inordinate responsibilities compared to enlisted personnel. Last, service academy graduates will disproportionately provide the pool of human talent for tomorrow's highest echelons of leadership. So (IMO) the whole thing is taken far more seriously because it has more serious implications.
@DulceDeLecheeee
@DulceDeLecheeee 2 жыл бұрын
@@g.lowenklee2268 That's exactly my point. Enlisted, especially junior enlisted, can do their very best job and still not be recognized by their leadership, while junior officers are recognized for just doing their job. As a result, many of the enlisted folks are separating and the military is wondering why retention rates are low right now. The military obviously cannot pay the enlisted more but the one thing they can do is give them the props they deserve and show them a bit of humility.

@@hughmac13 Not really across the board. In 1940 they used slide rules and they had to actually draw engineering diagrams by hand and women recruits today are not held to the same physical standards as the men.
@hughmac13
@hughmac13 2 жыл бұрын
@@TSimo113 But, in toto, yes. The presence or absence of slide rules does not make proficiency in the theory and practice of the subject matter any more or less difficult. That subject matter has also become more complex. You may be aware for example that in 1940 naval officers were not preparing to learn to build and operate nuclear reactors. As to physical standards, midshipmen are preparing to be naval and Marine Corps officers. While physical fitness is important, sheer strength is not, and the academic and athletic quality of potential USNA candidates now is unequivocally higher than in the past, as is the resulting intensity of competition among them for coveted spots at at the USNA and then among midshipmen for class rank. As an example, because of the increased number of potential candidates, the standard for Naval officers wishing to become Navy SEALs has become unimaginably high compared to what it was just twenty-five years ago.

That's a strategic move and long term investment...Many of these International exchange cadets will later become senior officers or even the head of the Navy of their respective countries.....And will likely align with US strategic and political interests in future bcoz of the bond they formed after spending 4 years at Annapolis....There is a long term strategic reason why they do this and not just for international charity.
