When I was in elementary school in the early 1960s, all us Alabama school kids donated a dime to bring the Alabama to my home town of Mobile, and put her on display to the public. For our dime, we received a card that allowed free access. I used to love crawling all over that huge ship! Year after, in my late 30s, I was driving home from flight school in Florida one evening, and while passing Battleship Park, saw an unattended SR71 sitting in the parking lot! Not only did I get to see this amazing spy plane up close, I also had a chance to climb up, and crawl around on it too. I doubt that'll ever happen again!

The a-12 was actually reportedly faster than the sr-71 with 10,000ft higher altitude capability, just did a tour yesterday around the ship and aircraft pavilion there, gotta love living in good ole port city

You were one of the school children?! I can appreciate what y’all did enough as my grandpa was the quartermaster of the ship in WW2. I’m not someone who cried but that ship gets me every time. I truly can’t explain to those who gave how much a simple dime means to someone 60 years later.

You could seriously spend a full day on this ship and not see everything. Really amazing self-guided tour with unprecedented access to key ares, many way below decks. It's insane not to see this if you are near Mobile.

No sailor ever referred to her as the "Lucky" A. She wasn't lucky. Her and her crew were skillful and mighty. That is why she is most truthfully named "The Mighty A" by her crew.

I have an LP that I ordered from eBay some years back that tells the story of the Alabama on one side and has a battle re-enactment on the other. It's also a picture disc.

I’ve been on the uss alabama and this video doesn’t do it justice the ship is massive and once in side it doesn’t feel like your in a ship just to think about the history and all the sailors are running through the ship and their positions and here you are in the future walking around it just an amazing feeling it’s also amazing how they can build this heavy thing out of metal and can float lol

You know this ship was bigger than 14 different battleships including every ship in Pearl Harbor and the Indianapolis and every destroyer ever and mostly every submarine and some aircraft carriers

I too was one of those Alabama kids in the 60s that contributed my nickles and dimes to bring the Lucky A to Mobile. Those nickles and dimes were earned by collecting pop bottles off the side of the road and and redeeming them at the country store just down the road I grew up on. Visited the Alabama on numerous ocassions in my later years.

My first visit to U.S.S. Alabama was in 1978. Very little of the ship was made off limits. At that time I wondered what all the I-BEAMS mounted in the ceiling were for. 20 years later I went back to find most of the ship was off limits to visitors. I did spend a long day sitting beside the ship waiting for the stars to finish filming. I had my photo made with Erika. Is the hull maintained?

Iowa class was definitely bigger. As far as the alabama not being biggest of its class. They were all the same size. O/A 680 ft
