USS Boxer (CV-21) roared into action off the coast of Korea on 15 September 1950 as depicted in these Navy films. The aircraft carrier launched combat sorties in support of the Inchon landings which began on that date.
Boxer entered the conflict with prop-driven F4U Corsairs and AD Skyraiders flying close air support that thwarted North Korean forces during the Inchon landing. Later in the war, USS Boxer's aircraft would perform strategic bombing as well.
In this film, pilots are seen in the ready room preparing for an attack, and returning from a mission. The ammunition ship USS Mount Katmai resupplies USS Boxer at sea in some scenes.
Corsairs and Skyraiders are armed on deck, and bombs carry chalked messages outbound to their targets. Sikorsky HO3S helicopters fly plane guard duties as the fixed-wing aircraft launch and are recovered.

My father and stepfather were both in VF-64 aboard Boxer at this time. In the first part of this video in the ready room I spotted my stepfather and I believe my father behind him. Dad transitioned to the A-3D in 1960 and died in a mishap in June of that year. My stepfather passed away some years ago. Wish I had known this video existed and have shown it to him!. Thanks for sharing this!

At the 3 minute mark is shown a pilot with a VA-65 arm patch. This designates Attack Squadron 65 which l suppose means exclusively AD Skyraiders, the Corsair pilots belonging to VF (fighter) designated squadrons. My dad was active with VA- 65 on the Boxer from April to July 1952. He bombed bridges, railroads, factories, etc. Had one "close support" mission lasting 3.1 hours. Sorry l never asked him about that one. He also hit Pyongyang on 29 August 1952. I wonder if the current leader's grandpaw heard the bomb blast. Really cool videos dug up from who knows where and keep them coming. I just subscribed. Maybe l will see dad in one. He was 1/4 Chippewa lndian and leader of a flight of four AD'S. They called it " Ed's Tribe.

Another great find. The F4Us, ADs and HO3S all well detailed. Fusing of HVARs interesting. Boxer still has her WWII 40mm guns , not yet replaced by 3in, Mt Katmai still has her 20mm AA guns at this late date. Nice shot of a Cleveland Class light cruiser at 2:40 and the 2 star airborne general is very young. almost too young to be a general. Thanks again.

Shocking to see the stark technological contrast in 1950 from the propeller planes and rescue helicopters. The props were at their zeniths.

I was 16 or 17 years old, playing guitar at the Acey Deucey Club at Mayport Naval Station. Our band took a break and on the way, I looked out over the bay to see the USS Boxer loaded down with helicopters bound for Viet Nam ... Seems that was somewhere around 1965.

Thank you once again Mr. Johnsen for another Korean War era post. As I've commented before I not only enjoy these, but am glad to see them posted for historical value. Getting a forgotten conflict in front of people who should know the service and sacrifice of previous generations. Thanks again for all you do and as always God bless you and yours! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸😊👍

Awesome video and great resolution with proper music. My dad (Commander John W Ramsey USN 1941-1963) was on the Boxer with VF-111 Sundowners as a fighter pilot and CO during one of his tours in the Korean War. Its great to see the Boxer and the planes in action! Seems to be little video coverage like this on the CVs during the Korean War, so thank you indeed. I wish my eyes would have allowed me to follow in my dad's footsteps to be a fighter pilot, but the Navy said i could not. I had a great engineering career but i still feel i missed my calling. Thanks again for the great video!! Those support crews kept those planes maintained and loaded excellent!

Served on the Boxer in 1966/1967 by then it was demoted to just hauling some troops and helecopters around to Viet Nam. Was known as a LPH4 back then. Had no type of weapons on then. If I remember correctly it was 888 feet long, which wasn't very long if you think about it, but I got lost in it a few times. I think that it went for scrap quite a few years ago.

You know, how dare the Chinese (and Russians) bite the hand that kept them from having to learn mandatory Japanese! We should've let McArthur press the point home for one united Korea! Perhaps the Viet Nam debacle could've been avoided as a result...!? What's next? West Canada vs East Canada!? Ridiculous, right? Unless we let it happen...
