I was reading about life aboard a modern sub, crew several dozen sailors, still had only one washer and dryer aboard. And whenever the machines are available the sailor must use his precious off-duty time to wash clothes, and he is not allowed to leave the laundry room while the machines are running in case it ever causes a fire.

On those old subs, the waste water from the toilet was pushed out at a pressure greater than the sea around them. It was critcal that all sailors knew the proper procedure, which valves to turn and gauges to monitor, to flush. A mistake or malfunction could easily flood the sub.

That's actually exactly what caused the sinking of a German Uboat during the first world war. One of the submariners did the procedure incorrectly and sealed the fates of the entire crew. Both hilarious, scary, and kinda sad.

I remember visiting the USS Cod on a school field trip. It had to be late 50’s, early 60’s? The thing I remember most, was how cramped it was! I couldn’t imagine serving in battle in one of those subs!?!🫡🇺🇸
