Not sure about after the refit in the '90s but 30 years ago, when the wife was assigned there the orlop deck held bunks for the duty watch (about 12) plus coffee maker, bug juice machine and a boombox/radio

@@alexhayden2303 was scarce then too, there are documents appealing to the navy and congress to purchase timber and forests due to the fact it was going away.

Has anyone noticed that there is a strange abundance of airman rating sailors stationed aboard a vessel that was operated nearly entirely by boatswains mates and quartermasters?

I'm sure it really doesn't matter. When they get assigned to USS Constitution they will undoubtedly be trained.

We have a lot more aircraft carriers than sailing ships these days mate. It's a ceremony posting, they aren't going to change their rate just to line up with the traditional crew distribution. I don't think they are even crewed to sail though I know they have done evolutions as demonstrations.

The loss of ballast after a long sea period must have caused problems?

Water is very heavy. The empty fresh water barrels would have been marked, refilled with sea water, and put back in the hold.
