Here is a full tour of the famous World War II submarine USS Drum (SS-228), the oldest surviving U.S. submarine and one of the top ten in performance out of 250 submarines in WWII. This is the clearest video on the internet of this fantastic and famous submarine, so please enjoy all of the fine details that can only be beat with an in person tour. This submarine is part of the USS Alabama museum on the east side of Mobile, Alabama.

I like that this is out of the water. You can see the whole thing and you know it isn't rusting away.

I toured this as a kid when it was still in the water and again less than 10 yrs ago. As a kid, it seemed huge. As an adult, I couldn't get out of that metal tube fast enough so I basically fast walked from one end to the other. So thank you for this tour so I can see what I forgot as a kid and what I missed as an adult.

They have done an incredible job restoring that boat. It looks as if it could sail today.

The Alabama and Drum, they are THE BEST warship museums in America. Thanks to all who maintain them, and a salute to all who served. Dad served on the Bergall SS320.

my father was a navy diver from 1967-1971 , he rode the uss jallao, uss bang, uss drum, and a short run on the uss swordfish, they kept changing subs to which one wasnt broke down at the time haha. he took us to mobile alabama for the old diesel boat there. i spent my life as a soldier with several deployments and was scared during all of it, but theres no way in hell that anyone could ever get me into a submarine thats not on land. those guys truly have balls of steel

That was a great tour! Thanks. I've visited two subs, the USS Cod and the USS Requin, but I've never had access to the conning tower. Nice to see it for real outside of the movies.

2:10 Intersting fact: On USS Tang, 13 sailors escaped through that forward escape hatch. It's notable because it's the only known instance of the Momsen Lung being used, though not all who escaped that way used a Momsen Lung that day, apparently.

Great video! One minor comment: In the forward engine room there is an auxiliary diesel generator below the two main diesel generators. If all four main diesels are being used for propulsion on the surface, the auxiliary diesel can be used to charge the battery.

Thank you for a great video, especially for showing a closeup of the list of men who served on the Drum. My father was a CEM and served on several patrols in WWII on the boat. It was exciting to see his name on the plaque. What a wonderful restoration!

First, the USS Drum is NOT a ship, it is a BOAT! On November 22, 1943 while on her 8th war patrol, the Drum suffered a severe depth charge attack. The aft door frame upper hinge and adjacent plating in the conning tower (common on early Gato-classes) cracked and was letting in water at about two to three gallons per minute when submerged. The Drum headed immediately for Pearl Harbor, where an attempt to fix the door was made by replacing the after bulkhead with a new one without the problematic aft door. However, on a test dive on January 1, 1944, the conning tower began to buckle. Lockwood sent the USS Drum to Mare Island for an overhaul and a entirely new conning tower. At Mare Island, she received a new, much stronger Balao-class ("thick hull") conning tower. This makes the Drum very unique! She's a Gato-class submarine with a Balao-class conning tower!

There was two people that did the restoration on the ship with no help from the government. We can send billions of dollars to other countries but we can’t preserve our own history. Let’s not sugarcoat it.

Blown overboard ... these subs only dove to avoid detection and attack. Since diesels only ran surfaced it wasn't an issue. Air trapped in the boat was sufficient for 24 hours give or take. But such long submergence was rare.

The Drum made thirteen patrols and was depthcharged on everyone. On the eighth patrol a depth charge cracked the conning tower and they had to go to mare island naval ship yard and have it replaced. They had to go back to calif after the thirteen the for more repairs. No the Drum will not be put back in the water

Quite the change from the time I was there. They had just pulled it out of the water. That thing was a mess inside and out. As I remember it had zero paint. A Rusty mess top to bottom. The inside was almost unbearable. Looking down into the lower deck there was water with grease, oil and diesel floating on top. They were in the process of pumping it out. Cudoz to the people who cleand her up. I may take a trip to see her again.

One thing about it subs definitely weren't designed BY a big bodied person like me and it shows undoubtedly they were designed by a skin and bones built person considering how tight quartered a sub is and was when the drum was designed and built

Fun facts: One of the officers serving on the sub was reported to be 6'7" and one of the skippers was said to be 6'4". The people who served on this sub and even of this entire era are some of the best the world has ever challenged, but with that I feel like this video is a great example of how we are not that far removed from people like that. Our appreciation, knowledge, and most of all the example they provide shows us we can believe in our own strengths and over come - especially in times of need - the fortitude to find a way is in our very being.

I’ve visited this display. It’s in Mobile. The USS Alabama is moored there. There is also a Aircraft Museum on site. It’s a days worth. The Alabama is incredible. The Drum is cool af. The restoration on all of their displays is incredible. Well worth a visit. And I believe that you can arrange a campout on the Alabama. Always wanted to do that.

Utterly amazing technology of the 1940’s. So very complex and so we’ll kept by the curators. It looks like it could go on a cruise today! It’s amazing the crew was so well trained to operate this, not to mention-battle! I’ve sailed on the water, but can’t imagine operating blind UNDER the water😳

I heard they are going to fix the sub and put it back in the water, otherwise, I have visited a while back like 5 months ago or so, and it was fascinating how it was in 1941-1945 in the War World ll. Great to see this like me and other young folks. Especially that theres very few ships and subs to look and go through.

There are a handful of WWII subs around the U.S., but this one is the best or nearly the best because of it's wartime record. It was one of the stars. The one in the Midwest has a working Diesel Engine that they run sometimes and the one in San Francisco (Pampanito?) has a working Torpedo Data Computer.
