USS Lexington (CV/CVA/CVS/CVT/AVT-16), nicknamed "The Blue Ghost", is an Essex-class aircraft carrier built during World War II for the United States Navy. Originally intended to be named Cabot, the new aircraft carrier was renamed while under construction to commemorate the recently-lost USS Lexington (CV-2), becoming the fifth U.S. Navy ship to bear the name in honor of the Battle of Lexington.
The Japanese reported LEXINGTON sunk no less than four times! Yet, each time she returned to fight again, leading the propagandist Tokyo Rose to nickname her “The Blue Ghost.” The name is a tribute to the ship and the crew and air groups that served aboard her.
Since 1992, the ship has been docked in Corpus Christi, Texas, where she operates as a museum.
You can get a big dose of World War II history if you visit the USS Lexington Museum in Corpus Christi. “The Lex,” as she sometimes is called, is a retired aircraft carrier docked at 2914 N. Shoreline Blvd. It was the oldest working carrier ship in the United States Navy when it was decommissioned in 1991.The carrier arrived at Corpus Christi beach in 1992. The vessel has a 910-foot flight deck, the size of about three football fields, and held a crew of about 3,000 service members during World War II. The Lex has 20 restored vintage Navy aircrafts on the flight deck. Also accessible are many other parts of the ship, including a theater, post office, barbershop, hospital and captain’s quarters. Smart phone tours in English and Spanish are available on tour routes. The Lex normally is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Labor Day and Memorial Day. The phone number is (800) LADY LEX.
There's a reason why people have called the Lexington Museum on the Bay one of the most haunted places in America.
There are things that cannot be explained on the decommissioned World War II aircraft carrier, including ghostly touches and shadowy figures roaming the decks.
Charles "Rusty" Reustle, director of operations and exhibits, said the museum receives hundreds of reports of "supernatural" activity each year.
Among the most famous sightings are a sailor dressed in uniform helping lost guests find their way back to the deck and a sailor in the engine room giving a lecture on how the turbines work before vanishing into thin air.
