so sad, she was IMMACULATE before the sinking.... i remember going there a few times when i was younger.

When you said "New Jersey" you explained it all! That main induction valve's malfunctioning led to the sinking of the USS Squalus, a submarine that sank off the coast of New Hampshire during test dives on 23 May 1939, resulting in the deaths of all but 33 of her crew. If the USS Ling could be towed to a place easily accessible I can imagine a lot of her old crew and many sub sailors would volunteer to bring her back to what she was before she sank.

Truely sad what happened to the ling, I have memories as a kid growing up in north Jersey in the late 80s early 90s seeing her docked and always wondering how a sub got there in the first place and imagining her still being functional after all that time. But now as I watch this video I can feel the frustration this old timer must have as he shows you broke gauges stuck levers and draws full of rust and crud it's gotta be heart break for him and all the others that put so much time into it. I hope they can save her as former Navy if you ever need someone to scrape rust and roll paint give me a call and I'll throw on my coveralls and get to work

I've been through the Ling twice what a shame you didn't get her before the sinking. She was in such great condition and would have been much easier to overhaul than what you have to deal with now. Gonna be a real challenge getting he down the river. Good luck with her.

Thanks for watching. I wish I had the opportunity to visit her when she was still a museum ship. We have a long way to go and hopefully she can be restored to her former glory.

This is such a sad story. I went to see the ling back in school as one of our class trips I think in the eighties. The navy should step up and restore this treasure.

The navy wanted to scrap her or sink her as a target. If it wasn't for the former crew of the ship pushing to make her a museum, we'd have an artificial reef now.

The Navy should not spend a penny frankly. They can't keep up the active ships and those in reserve on their required maintenance schedule. Hopefully, the folks trying to preserve her will do a better job than the historical society did. They could learn from the folks who run the USS New Jersey as a museum about how to run the ship as a museum.

@@kman-mi7suIn fairness to the original team that organized the museum with the LING, perhaps the best course of action would be to save as many artifacts as can be retrieved for use in other submarines and/or museums. Thus, the LING would not be forgotten. LING is better of than CLAMAGORE.

That would be the best scenario. At this point considering her condition, tow her somewhere and put her on land at a park or somewhere for display and maybe a slow restoration of the inside.

I actually trained on the Ling in Brooklyn N.Y. The boat looks to be in terrible condition. From the looks of her I don't think she can be restored. Its real sad to see her like that. Shes got to be eight years old or more. There really was a tight camaraderie amoung the crew I served with on my boat & all Submariners who served on these pig boats felt a real sense of brotherhood. I remember the Sub reserve units being constantly consolidated after the Viet Nam War ended until the Navy dismantled them altogether. I always looked forward to my weekend drills especially our weekends away because many of the men in them became good friends. It was sad when it came an end, but great memories remain especially from my active duty time. My last two week active duty was spent on the USS Seawolf in New London Conn.. She was docked next to the Nautilus just before the Nautilus was decommissioned. I actually saw Adrimal Rickover one day coming down the brow of the Sub tender in Charleston docked next to my Sub as I stood the topside watch.

I'm getting the feeling that U-534 would be easier to restore to full functionality. The Ling isn't even fully destroyed, they have to mess around with restoring everything piece by piece. Edit: would it not be possible to ask the original manufacturers to remake some of the machinery? It sounds out there, but that's exactly what they did with U-505, which was left as just an empty hull after testing by the US Navy. Every company provided components made exactly to the original specifications to serve as a memorial to German engineering.

The Ling could be flushed out with water a bunch of times. Of the fuel was changed out, a few runs up and down the Hudson would clean it out. Flour or corn flour absorbs oil really well.

Anything that produces an oily sheen on the water is illegal. You cannot use the river to clean it out.

I've been on it decades ago when it was beautiful. To get a return on investment it's best to get it functional. That way you can take people out on tours and thus enhance its attraction.

Um . The Ling was equipped with Fairbanks Moris, but actually, most American diesel electric boats I understand had GM Cleveland 12-278A diesels
@jimmiles33

I believe the difference is where they were built. Civilian yards got FM. Navy yards had Cleveland’s.

Looks like you guys have your work cut out for you. I'm assuming the story I heard about a thru hull valve failing is correct, haven't heard anything more about the vandalism that wad reported early on. Will she be going to a dry berth or remaining afloat.
@jimmiles33

She’s trapped in mud. Won’t fit under the bridge. People aren’t allowed to work on her since the property was sold. Likely will be cut up in place. Best thing is to let other museums part her out. Then scrap it in place.

Who was responsible for the security to see that nobody could have internal access and Vandalize the boat? If the museum can’t be responsible than the Navy needs to reclaim LING !

Get a tetanus shot first - the holes in the pressure hole, which the Navy inspectors documented in 2014 and got much bigger but were not repaired by the "New Jersey Naval Museum", sank her. facebook.com/WhoActuallySankTheLing/photos/pcb.104740001619751/104738844953200/
