Thanks to everyone who has enjoyed this video. I was in the Navy for 10 months when I took this video with a camera I won on the Price is Right just before the joining the ship in the Philippines. The video was taken in Seattle where we took on the Tiger Cruise family members for the cruise from Seattle to Long Beach the New Jersey home port.

One of the very interesting features of the ship is that there are baffles down the funnels so that if an enemy shell finds it's way down the funnel it would in theory be stopped at the baffle plate. The holes in the baffle plate are just a bit smaller than the enemy shells of the time.

Thank you, Commander, for an excellent tour of your ship. It is well done and well presented. I have made two visits to your ship in Camden, NJ. In my opinion, the Iowa class battle ships are the most beautiful ships ever built by the US Navy. I was a CIC watch officer on the USS Wasp CVS18. Commander, thank you for your service and for protecting our freedom.

sparky1301a dondavid She did a remarkable Vietnam tour. From what I’ve read when the US NAVY decided to decommission her it was a shock to everyone including Captain Snyder because they were so successful during their tour. I heard they were in for a refit to go back to Vietnam and the word came down from the NAVY top brass that she was going to be decommissioned. I’m glad they saved ALL of the Iowa’s but Camden hasn’t done a good job of taking care of her. I’ve visited all of the museum Iowa’s and the “Big J” is the least taken care of. I was really upset when I visited her this summer because her once beautiful teak deck is in desperate need of repair.

Most people dont' understand that the bow and stern of the ship are not armored. They are mild steel and the only armored part is a "box" that covers the vitals like turrets, magazines, and propulsion spaces. Also, depending on the armor scheme of a particular ship, the sides of the ship you see may not be the main armor, it could be inside the hull angled to help increase its effectiveness. Some schemes had multiple decks of thinner armor to "burst" the incoming shell into a relatively unimportant space and provided armor behind that to catch the fragments. Very sophisticated engineering, these were the high tech machines of their day.

There are a lot of us who love the old girl and her proud heritage that may otherwise never have a chance to see her up close. Great job on the video tour. Thank you. I served in the USN from 1959- 1962 kiddie cruise. I just wish (hope and pray) that the BB 62 be moved from Camden NJ to a much more safer and vested location. So many more would pay tribute to this great ship if only it were somewhere else. All I or we can hope for is that this happens sometime it deserves a better retirement mooring.

I went to Camden, NJ to see the New Jersey and I was completely worn out before I could see the whole ship. I'm in my 60s and I was so winded I wondered if I could make it back to my car. Just keep in mind that many of the spaces in the ship are ....as is....from it's military days. There is a step-over through most doorways. The ladders are steep and made for young sailors.

The Commander did a pretty good job- for a Dentist but did give some mis-information. The Barbetes are part of the ship and even if turned completely over would still be there. Some of the Battleships at Pearl Harbor hit on December 7 turned over and dropped their turrets but the barbetes remain intact in the ship. The Arizona Memorial has one barbette that is partially exposed depending on the tide. As mentioned the Turrets themself just sit in the barbetes by gravity and turn on the roller ring. Also the turret control booth is where the triggers were and also a plotting "computer'.

no battleships rolled over at pearl.... only the Oklahoma got close to doing so, and even then, she wasnt fully rolled over, she was sitting at 135 degrees to port, and the turrets were burrowed into the mud, so there was not enough angle or depth to permit them from falling out.

The tour guide keeps saying that the propellant is "black powder'and it's NOT it's actually compressed tubular grains of NitrocelluloseThe primer/initiator is technically 9mm but that does not mean it is even remotely like a 9mm pistol cartridge... the "primer cartridge" is actually a straight sided tubular "Blank" cartridge that has the same rim diameter as a 30-30 cartridge. More precisely it is more similar to a 30-55Winchester rifle cartridge...

"Black powder" was abandoned years earlier for propellants that were more stable and predictable. If you're going to stand any chance at all of hitting a moving target, you have to know the muzzle velocity of your projectile. And a substance like "black powder" falls well short of that.

Ron - Perhaps the best tour I have seen - you provided lots of great details. As always per the discussions below - a few things need more detail. The 9mm referred to in the turret tour is the 50Cal firing primer or cartridge (similar to a rifle brass shell) used to electrically fire into the tail end powder bag - which in-turn detonated all 6 of the bags. The other point of going slow (5 knots). This was only for shore bombardment. Firing at other ships etc could always be done at any speed. Shore bombardment requires plotting both the ships and target locations on a chart to determine firing angle and range. When done manually - it takes a bit of time, hence slower speeds. The 1956 installation of the MK 48 Plotting Table in Main Battery Plot allowed dynamic tracking of land points with the MK 38 Director radar. The tracking input into the plotting table allowed a “tracking point bug” to be placed on the firing chart so the Battleship always knew its location and could then fire in shore bombardment at any speed. The New Jersey MK 38 Director always had some type of radar attached but it was updated several times with technology changes. I look forward to seeing your other video’s - again Great Job to both Jim’s. Ken Conklin - New Jersey’s Commissioning FCO

Actually, as far as turret gun room compartmentalization, the New Mexico Class Battleships were the first to have separate gun rooms for three gun turrets. The two gun turrets of the New York/Nevada Class also had separate gun rooms.

I’m assuming this video was done some time before the AN/SPQ-9 was installed. I know Wisconsin, Iowa and Missouri had it installed so I’m sure New Jersey had it as well. +ihavenoname73 the primer cartridge (incorrectly described as 9mm) is fired (electrically or as a backup - manually) through the breech mushroom into the red black power patch on the back of the rearmost power bag. That in turn ignites the propellant in the first bag which then ignites the other five bags by sympathetic explosion which in turn propels the sixteen inch shell up and out of the barrel. The 16" guns had a range of over twenty miles.

I missed seeing the Jersey by a day. I left gunners mate school in the great lakes, l went home for leave and reported to my first ship, leaving for Vietnam . When I found out I missed seeing the Jersey I was really bummed out. I enjoyed this tour but the commanders use of wrong terminology for gun functions etc, was off putting for me. I cannot imagine the BB's lasting much longer other than as tourist attractions. Cost has to be phenomenal for that. Thanks for your effort .

Battleships had to slow down to 5knots to find the target and stay on target? That is a new one on me. Most be some fine print to that statement as I know of no naval battle with battleships, where they slowed down to 5 knots. Certainly they didn't during Battle of Jutland or Battle of North Cape. Maybe he means 100% chance of hitting versus educated guessing of old where you could hit a moving target while moving at speed but it was just harder to do so.

Sir... I applaud your service... but you are not entirely correct on the teak deck. In addition to what you said... They also use teak wood because its the only wood that when wet isn't as slippery as metal, holds up well in wet conditions (does rot) AND also its easier to repair battle damaged wood more quickly instead of metal. These are the reasons Aircraft carrier's decks of the same time (WW2) were made of teak wood.

The majority of the Pacific Island bombardment in WW2 was done by the Older Battleships & Cruisers. The newer Battleships like the USS New Jersey, USS Alabama, & USS North Carolina class ships screened the Aircraft carriers. Note: Those big guns need to be lowered to the load angle & reloaded & elevated again to the angle of fire. Those guns are 16 inch 50 caliber not 9 mm. Tony Trotta

+ramairgto72 By law, at least one or two of the Iowa-Class ships are kept in a state where they can be recommissioned within a matter of months. Before they were all decommissioned and set aside as museum ships or mothballed, Congress had it out about preserving at least ONE of these ships on stand-by for reactivation, museum piece or not. They don't make guns like they did for those ships anymore. Believe it or not, the guns on current ships are smaller and less powerful! They prefer to use missiles and other guided technology versus shells the size these battleships were capable of lobbing. (The battleships themselves were decommissioned because the Navy felt they were an obsolete concept, vulnerable like any other ship now to supersonic missile attack, and very expensive to operate. Battleships are fast BUT heavy and burn a lot of fuel. They are not the most fuel-efficient vessels to operate.) Now, whether members of Congress REALLY wanted to have the battleships at the ready, saving them for pork ($$$ for their districts), or felt (like the A-10) there was a place for them, they wanted at least 1 ship ready to be pressed back into service. The Iowa-Class ships were fortunate that because of their notoriety and utility they were all preserved. There are many, many classes of ships that have disappeared all together -- not so much as a nameplate, builder's plaque, or rivet let of those ships! I forget which one it was, but the very last Iowa-Class ship in mothballs was in small danger of being scrapped but was saved as a museum ship. There was a fight in San Francisco city council about mooring the ship in the harbor as a museum because of anti-war elements (protests against the current War on Terror). It was a bunch of nonsense because the battleships were never involved in that conflict (last time they were used in combat was during the first Gulf War in 1991) and they're really a symbol of World War II at any rate -- the last 'good war' by most people's definitions. It was really too bad for SF but another city gladly took the ship at any rate.

+AvengerII Thanks for the rather good reply. Did I read you right, about having at least 1 Iowa Class ship to be able to rejoin the fleet? I'm rather versed in Navy history, despite being a Soldier :/ lol It just seems to me that the abilities of these ships are not replaceable by anything, the deployment of field artillery in a coastal environment can't come close to the abilities of this ship. Granted they do require lots of fuel, but a modern refit of say, Diesel / Electric would be a striking change in abilities. Or even a A3W reactor, I hear they have a "spare" sitting around doing nothing. Or somehow just make the current power units more efficient. We could even go as far as arming her with the new Rail Guns the US NAVY is working on and or the laser weapon system set for around 2020 deployment. Such wonderful craftsmanship and history, if they can keep the USS Constitution in active duty, we as a nation should keep one of these in service for the same reasons. It cost about $1 an American to send Curiosity to Mars, I think we can do this.

IF one of the two were to be recommissioned, it would have been the Wisconsin, one she is near Norfolk navy yard, which still has a warehouse full of parts for the ships, and the Iowa is still down turret 2. The navy has been procrastinating big time with the repair of it. It is now to the point where it is better to keep it as a memorial and shrine, rather than repair it.

Ship to ship bombardment, an almost unfathomable fury. The men of the H.M.S. HOOD found this out. A salvo of the Bismarck sent her to the bottom in a matter of minutes. The Bismarck would have continued her reign of terror but for an outdated "Stringbag" with a lucky torpedo strike disabled her rudder. Imagine her repair engineers, captain we tried our best but unable to fix rudder, doomed as a sitting duck with out air cover. She caught #### till she too succumbed to the eternal sea.

my question is, why was a tour of a warship given by a dentist? that's right gang, the tour guide was a commander in the dental corps. you can tell by his sleeve insignia.

The dental officer was a Battleship Historian and was available. I was the first nurse to serve on a battleship and the first battleship battle group West Pack deployment. The camera used was one I won on the Price Is Right.

Need to bring Iowa class back since the new Navy is made of tin foil like the Fitzgerald.

Build new ones, build many of them, and build them better. Army is toying with the idea of 1000 mile range rail guns. With that range you can fire from the east side of Japan's coast that faces California and hit targets beyond shanghai. That's a quarter the distance between Hawaii and Tokyo. We could bring back coastal defense guns! An Iowa when you factor in inflation costs less money to build than a Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, which we have 68 in active service, with 89 planned total. Build 2 for active duty for each of the 10 ford carrier groups, plus 1 additional for the pair for dry dock. So you would build 30 total. The metallurgy that we have out performs 1940s metallurgy. leave the Iowas as museums as we can do much better.

@@rccarsandmusic2641 www.popularmechanics.com/military/research/a29476778/army-long-range-cannon/ This is what a modernized battleship would look like with the range of those new rail guns. i.imgur.com/4nNJWJi.png I picked the yamato because this CGI image incorporates modern equipment such as VLS cells & modern day destroyer guns. . That CGI image incorporates three sets of 61 VLS cells when a Tico has only two sets With modern engines you don't need as nearly as a large ship, BUT i want to incorporate a large gym because our sailors have an obesity crisis. There would be power weight lifting racks & treadmills as far the eye can see. With such a gym you shouldn't get a promotion unless you stay healthy. I would build three of them for each carrier group, one would switch places with an active battle ship so it could go into the dry dock . Therefor fleet would have 18 rail guns that have a 1000 mile range that could have triple the firing rate as the iowas which was 2 shots a minute per gun. Think of how handy it would be to be able to fire the guns from a Israel port and hit targets within the capital of iran or anywhere within turkey.
