As a young sailor, I was stationed at NSGA Skaggs Island, CA in 1966. Down the road from the base was a place called Cuttings Wharf off the Napa River. In the mud next to the beer joint we used to visit, were several wooden steamships. We were told they were used as troopships and transported U.S. troops to Europe during WW I. We explored them and were pretty amazed as none of them seem to be much larger than 150' overall. I bet they could tell some neat stories were they able to talk! One of them is still visible on Google Earth just a bit to the side of a building and parking lot.

You may be more knowledgeable than me on this, so I'm curious. Why couldn't someone like me with a welder, and a free week, come in and brace up the boat, and cut out the structurally compromised areas, and well in thicker plating, and then just skin up the entire exterior with thin metal. It'd only be about a week of time, and ~500 in metal, to get it floating again. After it floats, you can tug it down to where you can make an impression of the hull, and just hydro-blast out a new aluminum hull for it, of the same shape.

@billmorris26133 жыл бұрын
Evan Moore It’s probably in a navigable waterway since the Sachem is in it. It would be hard to claim it is not a navigable waterway with the Sachem sitting in the creek, according to, Google Earth, about 550 feet from the Ohio River. If you come into Taylor Creek from the Ohio River there is probably not much the land owner can do legally. Even if they own the land on both sides of the creek and the creek itself. They can keep you off of their land. My camp is on a small river and I own to the center of the river for over 2,000 feet. I do not own the land on the other side of the river. The river is considered a navigable waterway, even though I can walk across the river, when it is at its normal level, and not get my knees wet. I had an issue with people in kayaks, canoes, and tubs using my big beach. They claimed they had the right to use my beach because the river is a navigable waterway? So I went to the District Attorney about it. He told me I could not stop them from coming down the river in their boats, even though I owned it because it is a navigable waterway. He also told me this is covered under both, state and federal law. But, my beach was not part of the navigable waterway and I had every right to run them off and call the sheriff if they refused to leave. And that I could have them arrested for trespassing. So you could check with the DA for that county or possibly the Coast Guard, which might be the better source for that information, to verify rather Taylor Creek is, or is not, a navigable waterway. But who ever owns the ship could probably post the ship for no trespassing. But I believe you could use some type of boat if you entered the creek from the Ohio River, to take pictures all around the Sachem, unless it is not considered a navigable waterway. But I don’t see how it could not be a navigable waterway especially with the Sachem setting in the creek.

The issue with telling people about these historical vessels and buildings that are stuck in place is that mass vandalism follows. A little abandoned town called Concrete city in PA was like this where only locals knew and respected the site. Once the internet started and it was shared about the site was vandalized and trashed to a point buildings which were designed to last forever had holes in them, fires from camping drug addicts damaged the concrete and needles strewn about. People still go back there despite all the trash and tasteless displays
