This is a slide show of the USS VANCE DER 387. I put this together back in 2010 and lost it. With a series of HD crashes. It shows life aboard a DER in the 60's. Any music played was added through the program used back in 2010 to produce the slide show.

I was on USS VANCE DER 387 1959-1960. I and two other high school classmates joined the Navy together, boot camp together, all got orders to VANCE together. One of us has passed away, the other and I are still in contact.

Thanks for the view. Just checked Vance's DB and didn't see your name posted. I looked for Lauie. Would you please go to ussvance.com and make a log entry. Leaving yours, your two buddies names also. Just to keep the ships roster close to being accurate. Thanks, Joe webmaster ussvance.com

Thanks for sharing, Joe. My ship USS Brister DER 327 was one of several DER's (Destroyer Escort Radar Picket) ships who cruised together from Pearl Harbor to Vietnam in March 1965. Each DER became area commander for a zone of the coast of Vietnam.

I am working on a history/photo book for my dad (from his writings)who served on this ship beginning 17 Oct 1963 and I've enjoyed learning more about the ship. He had some great experiences while serving. Thanks for putting together this slideshow.

Andrea thanks for thinking of your dad. What is his name? For much more on the ship go to ussvance.com. There are 100's of pages to look at. You can also contact me through the webmaster link if you are looking for anything special. Perhaps I can help. Joe

I happen to come across your slideshow while searching for information regarding the US DEs serving WWII. It reminds me of my time in the early 70's served on HQ-1 Tran Hung Dao (USS Camp) in the South Vietnamese Navy. Your pictures provide several deck details of the vessel. Sometimes I wish to have the skill, the information, and the knowledge to build a model of HQ-1 for keepsake. Thank you, Joe B.

Oxman glad to hear of your interest. You are the first to have sailed on any DER, that I know of, which had been transferred to another Navy. If you really want to try and construct a model I might be able to help. I have ship plans which I can scan an send to you. Drop a note to 487 joe at g mail. com. Get rid of the at and spaces. I have a 1/700 scale of Vance also a larger made from construction lumber. There is also a 1/48 RC model I have on the website.

We were on board at the same time, but I don't remember him. Perhaps because he was a "snipe" and I was a "radioman". I was on board from 65 -68 he was on board from 63-66.
