A small clarification: socialism, which had been around for almost 70 years by that time, does not need to be identified with communism. I know it sounds the same to you in the West, but in the USSR everyone knew the difference. Socialism was an economic system, and communism was the goal towards which the country was moving and which was never achieved. Communism is a utopia: people will work for fun and get everything they need for free, there should have been no money at all. The irony was that in the 60s Khrushchev promised people communism by 1980. There were people who sincerely believed in this, so much so that they abandoned the idea of saving money for old age. At the time when this song was written, the 1980s had already passed, and the country's economy began to collapse at an alarming rate, instead of communism, people saw food queues and the return of the card distribution system for essential goods, when in addition to money they had to confirm their quota.

Thanks for the reaction, friend! In fact, the people who created punk rock in the USSR didn't even know what it was and how to sing it, huh. I'm looking forward to your reactions about this punk rock band again! I would like to see songs like "my defense", "Russian Field of Experiments" and "long happy life".

I always look forward to your reviews of Russian music. Perhaps you are the best in understanding and interpreting texts and the ideas that the author put into them. Thank you for this!

И все же Летова нужно слушать под гитару, так как-то привычней. Но это мое мнение.Большое спасибо за обзор!

You are not exactly correct in a couple of small details so let me explain to hopefully make you understand it better. The plan itself is a reference to the five-year plans of the early Soviet Union during which alot of the Union's industry and infrastructure was built. It is a symbol of the government issuing goals for the people to work-work-work on. "The key to the border is broken in half" - can be understood in both ways, but given that the borders were closed, it probably ment that they were not going to be opened. We have shut ourselves and broken the key. "All the dirt have turned into bare ice" - when you step into dirt you get dirty, when you step on bare ice you can barely scratch it but if you are not careful, you can fall hard. It is probably taking about all the dirt of the society ending up in the Party and dealing harshly with those who are not careful near it. While early in the days you could join the party and 'get dirty' now all you can do is be careful because they don't need you. They have shut in. "I have promised not to participate in the war game, but on my army cap there is a hammer a sickle and a star" - military service was mandatory for all physically fit men back in the Union. It did not matter whether you have promised youself anything. The hammer, the sickle and the star are the symbols of workers, farmers and the communist future that they were going to build. "With world-wide liberty they tore her flesh" - here you make emphasis on blaming this on the western countries, but you forget that it is only a common place in the west in thinking that the Soviet Union was all about oppression and lack of freedom. One of the points of the Soviet Union was that they were fighting for the liberation of people all over the globe from the oppression of the capitalists. But the Soviet people had to pay for that which is what I do believe Egor is saying here. "Only grandpa Lenin was a great leader all the other were such shit" - this is actually more subtle than you think. It talking about the perception of their leaders by the common people and the longing for the early years of the Union before Stalin, World War II, Cold War and the economic stagnation reaction to which the Perestroika used to be. And Letov says in the first verse that it "keeps on going and going" because basically he sees no end to it. "Well with communism everything will be great" - here you have said that 'well, haven't they have had communism for seventy years?' No, Soviet Union was a socialist state led by the Communist Party - the communism was the goal, a state when there would be basically no need for a government and money because the production capabilities would be able to satiate the needs of every citizen in every way. Many people in the west misunderstand that, sometimes to the point of calling radical liberals Marxist or communist and blaming all the excesses of radical liberalism on 'evil commies coming to power'. Such are the results of over a century of anti-communist propaganda. "I woke up at night and realized - everything's going according to plan" - when you dream of communism and then awake in the middle of the night realizing that it is the same old plan song like in the early years of the Union. The last scream "всё!" is the first word of the refrain "everything" but out of context it can be translated as "That's it!" Btw I have noticed that you are yet to react to Король и шут - they were one of the biggest Rock bands of the nineties and early 2000s in Russia along with Aria. They were playing Horror Punk. I recommend the live video called "Невеста Палача", Олимпийский, 18.12.2003

What an intense, visceral video, and your reaction was no less moving. Musicians You've Never Heard Of has to include another Russian, this time from Siberia - Varvara Ubel (pronounced varVARa - a variant of Barbara - OObel) a girl who specializes in Jazz and Blues.

No, dear friend, you completely misunderstood Yegor Letov’s message. Yegor was a convinced national-Bolshevik, as he called himself. Lenin for Yegor was practically a saint, but the rest, in his opinion, distorted the whole essence of the movement towards communism. Once again I am convinced that Western people have absolutely no idea what Russia is, who the Russians are, our ideas, our aspirations. I already wrote to you that we are different, we are no better and no worse...we are just different. You have already translated quite a lot of texts into English and you should understand how difficult everything is. Yegor Letov was indeed “socially dangerous” due to his diagnosis and his beliefs. He was dangerous to leaders like Gorbachev, whom you idolize in the West. Yegor Letov opposed himself not to the political system but to the party nomenklatura, which perverted the idea of communism and socialism... and then, on top of everything else, destroyed the country - the USSR.
