I think those Soviet players realized then they hadn't "rescued" the Czechs from a counter-revolution, as Pravda wanted them to believe. Watched this in England...enjoyed every minute of it!

I luv how Czechoslovakia would always give the Soviets their hands full. Sweden not so much/often, I'm afraid... What puzzles me is that the games between Sweden and Czechoslovakia were always an open affair, given the fact that Czechoslovakia always challenged the big red machine seriously. When we beat them twice in 1977 it was simply surreal, especially the 5-1 game (I was in seventh heaven!), but Czechoslovakia snatched the gold, you're welcome! Do toho från Sverige!

I remember watching this as a boy in Canada, my father telling me why we should be cheering for the Czechoslovakia. a ted' jsem tady v Praze a bydlim tady uz skoro 17 let. Zivot je zajimavy a neprevidetelny..never thought back then I would be living in the country I was cheering for on that day. Canadians always cheered for the Czechoslovakia in those years...sad that Czech fans have such hatred for Canadian teams now...a few years ago here I saw Czech fans burning a Canadian flag when we won.

Oh yeah, I was 7 and still remember some of this, all transmitted from Stockholm in March 1969 (we had the WC the following year too, but this time in glorious colour and partly from Göteborg/Gothenburg...)! Czechoslovakia beat Soviet Union twice (2-0 and 4-3), whereas Sweden beat the Czechs twice (2-0, 1-0). On the very last day, 30 March, all three teams had a shot at the gold medal. But the Czech loss, 0-1, against Sweden meant all three teams ended up on 16 points (one goal for 1-1 would've meant gold for the Czechs...), and CCCP ended up as gold medalists (again), with 59-23 against our 45-19, and having beat us twice. Four players scored 14 points: Anatoli Firsov (10+4), Boris Mikhailov (9+5), Ulf Sterner (9+5) and Jaroslav Holik (4+19). Canada ended up 4th place with 8 points, and didn't play the WC again until 1977. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1969_Ice_Hockey_World_Championships

@Kotinka Yes, our players take positions in Russian KHL teams. Our players take Russian money and our players win individual trophys, like best scorer of KHL (Cervenka), or some years ago - best in points (Marek). Finaly, after all, it´s beautiful to see, how this players beat Russian team. For example WCH 2010 finals against Red Army All Star Team, or three times a row in WCH 2011. After championship in Bratislava and last match against Czech team, Bykov could say only "Da svidania" :D.

I can totally see why the players from CSSR would behave the way they did in matches against USSR. THEN, in 1969. They were young, they were athletes competing against long time rivals in a very contact-involving sport. And, above all, they felt extremely patriotic, which is not unusual for anyone representing his/her country to begin with and was amplified million times due to the tragic events of 1968 in Prague and in CSSR. But for a grown-up man to keep talking about it? Growing up means looking from the wisdom of your age! Soviet hockey players, nor any part of hockey or any other sport, had nothing to do with August 1968 in Prague. Maybe Mr. Golonka is just trying to make some profit on an interview, who knows. Some actions by the CSSR players in those matches were low-class or no-class. I would expect grown up men to admit they were done in the heat of the moment rather than keeping to justify such disrespectful actions or even praising them as heroic. I will tell you what heroic is. Heroic are actions of the people trying to stop Warsaw Pact/Soviet tanks in the streets of Prague. What has nothing to do with patriotism or heroism is almost spearing your hockey opponent goalie or playing pretend-machine-gun with your hockey stick after scoring a goal in an international sport competition in the safety of a hockey rink in Stockholm. Especially when you know the opponents cannot even stand up for themselves the way they (at least some of them) want badly, due to restraining orders from those same Soviet bosses who ordered tanks to go to Prague! Disrespecting people who faithfully represent their nations always means loosing respect to your own nation. Instead, what earns respect is when you show that you can do better than that and respect your fellow athletes who are working as hard as you do, to compete in sports. You want to make a political statement? Use proper channels, which is never a sport competition. Boycotting has been a known practice but is totally different from participating in a competition and humiliating or disrespecting your opponents. I have no doubt CSSR players knew very well that Soviets were "strongly discouraged" (read = would be punished for tarnishing the image of a leading nation building communism and happiness for all the good people on Earth) from engaging in confrontations beyond hockey plays. This is why such a look of disgust on faces of some USSR players: some of them would want very much to challenge and fight against some unsportsmanlike opponents on CSSR team but they had families, jobs, and careers to lose over that once they come back home. (It took no more than one step in the wrong direction in USSR before you would find yourself outside the favored and praised folks, marked as an "unreliable element" forever.) This is why I repeat. It is one thing for young athletes to get carried away then, but a totally different and wrong thing to keep talking about it fondly years later. This is as sickening for me as some modern Russians talking May 9 (Victory Day of 1945) every time team Russia beats team Germany at a World Hockey Championship (as it takes place in early May in recent years). Hatred is what is behind both examples. Whom do you hate? Hockey players? Like they bombed Prague in 1968? Like they marched on Moscow and Leningrad burning entire villages and towns in 1941? This is as sickening for me as watching NBC broadcast of Olympics which is extremely anti-Russian or anti-Chinese on every chance they get. Considering athletes as representatives of foreign policies of any country and thus making them targets of your hatred, especially publicly, is much worse than just nonsense. There, I have given you at least three examples of mixing sports and politics, each of them really ugly to me. Athletes represent their nations, their peoples, their families and coaches who raised them from their first steps to their international competitions. We never hear an athlete talking his government or president in a post-victory interview at Olympics. North Korean athletes might go for it but even then, we all know, how free they are in deciding to do so. This is why dragging politics into sports, or sports into politics, either way you cut it, is nothing but wrong. This is why I have such a low opinion of Mr. Golonka's, Mr. Ja. Holik's and some other CSSR players' actions in those two matches. Their opponents deserved none of that. In fact, respect to the Soviet players for not trying to draw attention of the officials to that clearly unsportsmanlike behavior. Same low opinion goes for the officials who never took appropriate actions at that tournament. I guess the then-existing world, including both the East and the West, had not reached the level of civilized norms that one would expect based on so many claims by both worlds (East and West) that they were the true civilized societies during that era. Sickening is the word! But I think and I hope, should such actions happen these days (2017), there would be disciplinary consequences, at least post-game, from IIHF or another responsible body. P.S. Tons of respect, growing with every year, to Jaromir Jagr as a hockey player but his wearing number 68, which he says he has chosen in memory of the events of 1968, is another example of immaturely dragging sports into politics or vice versa, in my opinion. Well, he had chosen his number at a very young age, he became a celebrity later, so it could be tough to change later probably even if he wanted to (maybe he does; maybe he does not). If we ask ourselves: "Should French, Ukrainian, Polish, or Russian (don't even mind Israeli) athletes shout "Hitler kaput!" in the face of every athlete from Germany that they compete against?", I hope that we agree on a "No!" for an answer there...
@alexeykobrinskii7360
@alexeykobrinskii7360 7 жыл бұрын
No, that has not happened in modern Russia in a way as unanimous as in the Germany/Hitler case. And it would be hard to expect that, given who is in power (former KGB man who was stationed in East Germany in Soviet era). In Yeltsin's time (the early post-Soviet Russia years), however, Russia did denounce, for instance, what happened in Hungary in 1956, officially and at a high diplomatic level. The video here shows an interview with Mr. Golonka. This is why the position in modern Russia on events of 1968 was not the focus of my comment. As for modern Russia again, there are fewer people with every year, who were alive and grown-up during Soviet era. One reason is a very short life expectancy in Russia. Another is that people leave Russia. In addition, there is most likely a bias among those who has left, in a "dissident" direction. This further dilutes the population inside Russia who can objectively assess those events in Prague. Another problem is that very few people have access to the actual true document-based account of those events. Most of those who spread "first-hand" stories sound so biased and polarized that when I read their stories, I can't help thinking that their blogs/posts/etc. are simply sponsored by one ideological side or the other. Sad but I personally doubt that the true details of who did exactly what will ever be known because former KGB people may simply destroy relevant archives, if not have done so already. And I do not tend to trust too much the accounts by the Western authors either because the ideological war has never ended, so both sides are engaged in heavy propaganda. Back to Russia: the reality is that the vast majority of younger generation, at least those who care to inquire, are fed what the present "leadership" feels like to get to the people's ears. Needless to say, this creates badly distorted views (on many different topics, not just the Prague Spring), hence your observation of how the modern Russia feels about the events of 1968 in Prague. Anyway, I am glad there are people who agree with me on "lots of things" in my original post (which focused on the video rather than on the question whether the invasion was a good thing and whether the invasion is approved upon in modern Russia)!

I am from Romania and I agree with you too. I am against russian government but not against the russian people. The average russian is suffering like the rest of us in eastern europe. All the governments are corrupt and only thing they care is of themselves not the people. The best and brightest are forced to emigrate to the West where most of them are not treated very well. Some of them adapt there,but they are still foreighners and not fully accepted in those societies.

Many don't realise just how badly Russians themselves suffered under communist takeover! It's a shame that the resentment still exists because Czechs,Moravians and Slovaks have had a very good history with Russian people for around 900 years!! That ONE event should not tarnish that because Czechs western and southern neighbors have been FAR WORSE over many hundreds of years!!

well, it s true that us army was coming from the west, and reached the western-upper bohemia. but it does not mean that we should not respect the fallen soviet soldiers, helped defeating nazis. it is true that if there was not soviet sacrifice, europe would suffer more. However, it does noway justifies fucking brezhnev in 1968. if there was any humanist marxist in that year, it was Dubcek. Appearantly there was not any in Moscow.

Не в обиду славным чехословацким хоккеистам будет сказано,мы их помним и уважаем( Глинка,Мартинец,Лала,Ружичка,,Кралик,Гашек,и другие),но канадцы-самые достойные соперники!

Once again! Yesterday, Germany: Czech Rep: Russia 2:1. Czechs crashing Russian star team and winning another golden medal. Guys with lions on their chest fought as lions and they won as lions even with 3 players against 6 Russians. This is a great example how courage, bravery and a huge will beating a huge Russian arrogancy. I am sure this was another white hell for guys in red:)))) and i am so proud of our guys with lions and egles.

It is Czechs, not Chzecks, you should learn your own language first. And, as you may notice, I got lotta arguments because of the thing, that it is not clear. Especially arguments against people, who think, they know everything. Btw, are you sure, that you are talking about Czech and not Chechna, right? Not many Yanks know the difference.

There has been extensive cooperation between Russia and Nazi Germany troughout the 1930s, secret German weapons test in Siberia in violation of Versailles treaty. Even Gestapo learned from the NKVD thugs how to torture and ethnically clense properly. There was a "de facto" Russian-German alliance and Moscow controlled Komintern supported Nazis in the early years of the war. That Stalin and Hitler later kinda fell out of love with each other is a different story

Thats the problem of soviet propaganda. We were not comunist. Only our government, and that was because of Soviet army in our country. I personally dont hate russians, I hate what soviets did to my country. Soviets won war in Europe, thats why we should be thankful to them, but what they did afterwards is why we hate them.

Because you mix up politics with sport I will tell you very important facts. Yes as a Czech I hated the USSR because they occupied our land but I hated only the politicians not the russian people as a group. And I am very grateful the soldiers who died for my "freedom". It was better than to live in German slavery in Siberia. Everybody knows they had plans to move the most of Czechoslovaks there if they won the war. USA did nothing for Europe until the Soviet Army should take the whole Europe.
