Great match, the junior seems pretty good. I would say though, that the junior needs to add more pressure when he is serving and play more aggressive. I noticed he was struggling with returns (seems he doesn't split step when receiving serve). He also seems rather slow and passive in rally situations. He's not creating any opportunities to attack, but rather just being reactive to the ball. Hopefully he can improve his fitness and start playing more aggressive in the future :) You seem pretty solid, probably add more depth to your shots, if anything.
@Tan124 жыл бұрын
Speaking as a former junior player, that kind of passive and defensive game wins a lot of matches at the low-to-intermediate and even somewhat advanced junior level due to a frequent lack of consistency from any opponents that try to play more offensively (I was the more offensive guy so I would know). It of course starts to fall apart once you get older or to a higher level and run into players that can be both aggressive and consistent, but the playstyle that bags someone the most wins at a particular level will always be an attractive one to them.
@timothynguyen83434 жыл бұрын
@@Tan12 you make a good point. It depends whether he wants to improve and be as good as the professionals. If so, the passive game style will not work. He would improve his chances of becoming professional by creating more opportunities to attack by developing a weapon, whether that's the serve, BH or FH etc... He can then construct a game plan around that weapon.

@toddcrickmore71964 жыл бұрын
Outstanding serving. Excellent court coverage. Be careful about hitting your returns down the line and short though-it's a good tactic against a serve and volleyer, but it gives baseliners the opportunity to put you out of position by hitting cross-court and making you scramble and chase after the ball. Other than that, very nicely done!

Hey Tim, another Tim from Hawaii. Algorithm popped you in today. Binge watched some of your old stuff as well. Your serve is on the verge of greatness. You're moving it around the box with confidence & pace. Forgive my uninvited trollishness - but take it from an old teaching pro - Pro/Am/College player - try tinkering with letting your racket head & arm drop lower & ever so slightly linger a bit more on wind-up while thinking "beast mode". Your motion is already all there with BOTH legs coiled up nice under center of gravity. Rare among players who've come up as you have = time vs levels. Tapping into more commanding power at the point you're at comes from your body - not so much the arm. Again, you're a rare one who's natural athleticism "gets it". The suggestion shouldn't throw off your timing it just irons out the old 'hitch' artifact from early days. And your present serve is already grooved enough to instantly return to for a reliable 2nd if need be. Once you get a feel for the mechanics toy with carving UP INTO the toss at contact. It'll kick like a mofo adding to your arsenal (great for doubles). Crush that thang! Good Luck!

Congrats on 5.0. As a former 5.0 (five years), now 4.5, I know how much work it takes to get there. Massive improvement from last video in your game, Tim. Interesting to see the progression one year later. Split step and footwork is much more efficient. Left arm on forehand and serve looks great (utilizing stretch shorten cycle) resulting in a better kinetic chain and less arming of ball. I did notice your split steps on serve returns looked ineffective (would hurt you against well placed, high pace serves). Also recovery didn't always look optimal but you may not have needed it here. Knee bend on serve is also too deep resulting in less of a leg drive (counter intuitive, think about trying to jump from a full crouch) and it probably makes your serve more difficult to time resulting in inconsistency (I had the same deep knee bend as a junior, mines probably still too deep as well). Always fun to see players that are committed to improving like yourself, keep it up!
@tennistim4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the analysis and detailed comment! Any thoughts on more effective split sets on serve returns?
@jasonandjustinbangs60114 жыл бұрын
@@tennistim You're welcome Tim! From Dr Mark Kovacs, PhD in Biomechanics and NCAA all american: "A lot of us are taught to split, land and then move. That's a great way to make someone slow... You should already know at the top of your split, where you're going, left or right." What he means is that when you first land, most people are pausing, stuck in place, instead of pushing off one leg in the direction of movement. Applied to the split step on your return I would first have a more pronounced jump, this gives you more time to make a decision on where the direction of the ball is going, then make a decision where to move at the top of your jump/split. When you land, don't land on both feet, land on just one foot that will explode in the direction you need to go. Hard to explain in words but much easier to show. You can find a detailed video on this on the ITF academy website called '5 keys to movement patterns in tennis' by Mark Kovacs. Or just compare your split step return to videos of the pros. Hope this helps! Best, Jason

Kid has good pop on the groundstrokes. FWIW IMHO, your backhand uses more arms than body 6:54, not that its bad but causes you to lose some pop and throws you out of synch. Love the bh return - very much in synch, low take back. You bh slice is a little choppy which causes the ball to float, need to follow thru rather than chop from top to bottom and use a little more body to get some weight into it. On the fh, you tend to fall back a lot instead of moving fwd, esp the ones from the baseline 5:50. Mid court you move fwd, baseline you fall back. Overall, love the match up. Good pace.
