Love this tennis. Great lobs, touch volleys and passing shots. Today’s tennis is just crush the ball from the baseline. Everyone plays the exact same game.

I watched Reneberge live at Texas A&M. He was NCAA champ at the time, playing double against the A&M team. He was just playing half throttled compared to this match, serving second serve speed the whole time, and still the A&M team had no chance, losing 6-2, 6-2.

Mac played quite well at this Open. But remember he had an outburst against Zivojinovic in the 3rd round that got him a 3 month suspension from the tour which meant he didn't play an official tournament again that year. Lendl was too strong for Mac that year in the quarters. I always used to think Reneberg looked like a serial killer

You should have seen Reneberg play college tennis. This match was serious. In the double college match, I saw him smiling, talking with his partner all the time, playing just at half throttled and still beat the Texas A&M team easily 6-2, 6-2

Racquet experts out there, can you help me out? That Dunlop looks less circular and too glossy to be the original 200g John used before and actually well after this date...I dunno, maybe the lights are making it shine, but I thought the original was all he used during his ATP career outside of wood.

You're right. Reneberg's technique does look modern. On the other hand, McEnroe wasn't known for the best technique. For instance on volleys he would sometimes stick out his racket at the last moment. Playing McEnroe's unorthodox game needs extraordinary ability.

McEnroe technique was unique to him, he was extremely gifted, he was a one off. Reneberg was more standard text book technique used by most players. McEnroe was special….

@@mickymalibu Miloslav Mecir was a little similar in his freedom with the racket but the speed increase with modern rackets has meant such freedom can’t survive. Also like Leander Paes. Closest I got to McEnroe was doubles on the outside courts at Wimbledon, he was god-like in his abilities, playing shots you couldn’t imagine were possible.

@@AndrewDCDrummond yes it’s a different game now for sure but Federer is not so unlike McEnroe skill wise also I think a lot of people don’t realise McEnroe was at the top in both the wooden racket era and the graphite era which is massive. It would be interesting to see how modern players would have done with wooden rackets and small racket heads or do the rely on the frame helping them.

@rondunn4336. You very conveniently forget that McEnroe had tremendous respect for Bjorn Borg during their years on the men's pro tennis tour and has frequently stated that he never had any problem with Borg during their matches against each other! McEnroe's angst was directed primarily at chair umpires, lines people and obnoxious fans (e.g , the obnoxious woman sitting in the lower stands during one of McEnroe's night matches at the U.S. Open) not players! A notable exception was his on-court arguments with Connors.
